Who's here

Ya know, maybe it's just me, but for some reason, I don't like knowing who's online and browsing at any given moment.

Before, I would sub-consiously think, "I'm going to post something and everybody will see it and reply right away!" (Yes, I am that egotisitical :D) Anyway, now I look and see only one other person browsing this forum and say, "Boy, it's going to take forever to get a reply."

I'm sure some people like to see who's online, but I prefer to live in this nebuleous little world and think that EVERYONE is reading these forums ALL THE TIME!

I guess we do have other things to do. ???

Just my 2 bits on the subject.

Bingo!

Over in the secretive Moderator's Corner, it seems most mods are in agreement that we like seeing who's online. :)

I find the who's online list useful, but that's from a moderator's point of view. I can see potential pros and cons to the feature, depending on what perspective you look at it from ;).

I like it for some unexplainable reason...

It's just another way the Bush administration is invading my privacy! Kust kidding.

Actually it's kinda nice in a voyeuristic kinda way.

Do moderators get user IP's along with seeing who's online?

your IP is your problem really but i like ahving the whos online feature, but as george has been saying, it might turn these forums into a chat room. if it does get to that i wouldnt like to be ther server handeling those requests....

Moderators can only get the ips of posters in their own forum.

When George promotes some moderators to supermods (mod all forums), I believe they can get anyone's ip.

But knowing someone's ip address is pretty minor in my opinion. You only have to worry if you are running a server, you have a bunch of script kiddies with a vendetta, and you haven't patched in a while. :D
The only other time you need to worry is if you routinely execute attachments in email, which may contain some trojan. ;).

You can get any member's IP address already by viewing the 'Who's online' list (not sure, but I believe this is only visible to moderators). Having the IP address of a member is of little use anyway (excluding malicious intent as you mentioned), except for keeping track of users who may use multiple usernames replying to their own threads in an attempt to mislead other members. The other use for having a member's IP would be that in the event that the member abuses the forum severly it could be used for tracking purposes if the abuse is to the extent that warrants further action ;).

My problem is people knowing the IP without need, I don't necessarily expect rogue moderators to dos me, I don't mind IP's logged on posts but I see no need in having an IP visible when the user or guest(?!) is just browsing and minding their own business.

Man, and I thought it was bad enough when I talked to myself. You mean to say people actully write to themselves in these posts.

Ah shut-up

No you can't make me, it's sad what society has degenerated to.

It's only because you're stupid.

Am not.

Are to.

LOL...in your example the IP address would be valuable so we could contact the appropriate authorities to get the indivdual the psychiatric help needed.

Here's an example of what I was talking about (keep in mind that these are the same person with multiple usernames except 'OTHER'):

*UN1 - Could anyone tell me how I can....?

*UN2 - I don't know, but I'm sure someone here is smart enough to tell you!

*OTHER - What you are trying to do is unethical.

*UN1 - I resent that remark  !

*UN2 - I'm with UN1, his question is perfectly ethical, your remark was rude!

And so on...basically to keep bumping their topic to the top and / or create the impression that a solution is desired by multiple people, making it seem that if you provide the solution, you'll be a hero...:D !

It has happened before (not mentioning any names), where 3 different users had the exact same IP address and all argued toward the answer to the same question. I could never prove it though because when I mentioned the matching IPs, the claim was they were on 1 shared computer and neither had knowledge of the other's use of the forum...lol ;).

Just wanted to clarify so that it wouldn't appear I wasn't off my rocker when I posted the remark you quoted ;).
