The Strange Upgrades

For the past two weeks, our site (most likely yours too) has been getting
e-mail from Westhost with regards to a series of Upgrades that are
intended to improve site performance. After searching the Westhost
site, we come short on learning about what these upgrades may be for.
The first two seemed usual to us, but they keep piling up as if it
was some kind of major work that's being done. It seems that its
something to improve "Disk Performance, Security or both."

----------------------------------------------------------------------
This Thursday, September 1st, from 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM MST, we will be
performing network and systems maintenance. The network maintenance
may cause approximately 1-3 minutes of inaccessibility for your site while
it is done. The systems maintenance will result in approximately 20-30
minutes of inaccessibility to your site.

Saturday, September 17th, from 12:00 AM to 6:00 AM MST, we will be
performing a significant upgrade to our network. This upgrade will cause
between 30 minutes and 2 hours of inaccessibility for your site while it's
being performed.

On Friday, September 23rd we will be performing an upgrade to all of our
servers between 10:00pm - 3:00am (MST). During this time the following
account(s) will be inaccessible for approximately 45 minutes:

We are not losing any money, etc as we do not sell anything at our site.
I am wondering if others are experiencing the same. It seems that a lot
of work is suddenly being done. It makes us wonder though if there are
any bandwidth or disk space bonuses that may be coming up. I guess we
have to wait and see.

Westhost Client Connections had an oddly worded message that only
said that their "IT Department's primary efforts continue to be
centered around improvements to the speed and reliability of our
infrastructure. We have made positive gains thus far, but have
aggressive plans over the next few months. These efforts represent
the core of our business and remain a top priority." It does not tell
us a whole lot though, maybe its a surprise. We like those.

Upgrades are good. Usually.

I think the major focus is on performance. There was an issue that some servers where haveing with freezing every x amount of mins for a few seconds and I know WH has been actively trying to improve things so that does not happen. I would imagine if they did give details on what was being done each time that the majority of use would be totally clueless on what they have said. :)

I belive that also any time that an update of something needs to be done that they have to make some changes. They have been working on upgradeing perl and some of the other basics so some of the maintnance could be in preperation for that.

As Armadillo said... "Upgrades are good. Usually."
