Subdomains (Westhost 2.0)?

Hi

First of all, great job Westhost... Over the years, you have added about 99% of the features I have could ever ask for, while maintaining unsurpassed value-for-money.

The only feature I can think of (at this point in time!) that is available with lots of other hosts but not with Westhost is the addition/removal/modification of subdomains. For example, I want the ability to add something.design64.net and have it either forward to an external URL, or, even better, point to a specified directory in my account (URL rewriting or something?). Though really a "vanity" feature, I think it would be very cool (and possibly useful for other people). I would not mind a reasonable limit on the number of these allowed (5? 10?)

Let me just differentiate between this and the current option you have for subdomains: I don't want to have to pay for a single subdomain and have it be a seperate account - I just want to be able to add subdomains to my domain where they use 'resources' off the single account that I pay for.

I believe Westhost will truly be unbeatable if you can add this feature to all current and future accounts (seeing as you already have covered every other feature!). A plus would be having control over mail (forwarding, etc.) for these subdomains, though I can understand that this may be asking for too much!

BTW, I think the forum is a great idea... I visit it every day!

We do currently allow 3rd level domain aliases. For example, you could point something.yourdomain.com to a specific folder on your main domain name (like yourdomain.com/something/).

You can set this up by filling out the Add-Ons form (https://secure.westhost.net/secure/new/addonsecure.html). There is currently a $10 setup fee for this, but if you need more than 5 setup at once, we can work out some sort of deal with you.

I'm not sure exactly how we'll handle these with WestHost 2.0, but for now this is an option if you'd like to set one of these up.

We appreciate your comments and suggestions, we love to know what we can do to better our service.

Hi Mark

Thanks for the quick reply. Actually, I was talking about subdomains working that way and being FREE

I knew about the ability to have them set up for a fee, but was hoping maybe Westhost could allow 5 for free, or something to that effect :)

You should be happy to know that subdomains are now included in our packages at no extra cost. For more details on this please check out http://www.westhost.com/packages.html

Hey Chris,

I did notice that... Thanks! Unforunately, I didn't notice that the starter package (the one I use) is the only one that seems to have a limit of 5 subdomains (someone else pointed that out to me) and was quite disappointed with that, seeing as everything else (e.g. POP3 accounts, FTP users, etc.) is unlimited as well as the fact that there seems to be an inconsistency of information - on several posts here on the forum by another WestHost moderator (and on WestHost's main page too) it says that subdomains are unlimited (implying for all accounts). It is the same with dedicated IP, multiple domains, Miva Merchant, ASP and JSP - on the main page under the "$7.95 web hosting" heading... I think it is a bit misleading to put it that way :? (though on the packages page this is cleared up).

Design64,

Yes, that is probably a little confusing. We didn't have all the packages completely defined when some of those posts were made, so older posts may be a bit contradictory. Thanks for clarifying all of that.
