Accounts by timezones.

I notice that there are alot of sitedown post this morning because of the maintnance that was done earlier this morning. I know this seems pretty obvious but I was wondering if accounts could be organized on the servers by timezones so that ones that are in a zone that would be at peak hours could be worked on at a diffrent time then the ones in the US. It may be that there are not that many and that most are in the US but it would seem this would save everyone a lot of headache.

I wanted to add that perhaps if WestHost put a notice at the top of the forum along with the rules. email, toll free and live links that stated to check the update page first if your site is down. Folks do not seem to be getting that.

This may also be because the two forums they do have for Annoucements and Updates do not carry this information either. I know it can be more work for WestHost to post the same thing in many places but would it not cut down on the amount of tickets and cries for help in the long run?

Shawn,
Have you seen any updates on 2.0? I can't find any since the apology note. I like you am "weathering” this out. I have 4 other hosts I am using and Westhost was by far the best of the lot. The last thing I can find was an announcement that the 2.0 upgrades were delayed until 10 October. 10 October has come and gone apparently without explanation of why it has not been completed. I find this worrisome, I know that they have lost accounts over this; the loss of accounts coupled with an increase in required resources is one of many formulas for bankruptcy. The long silences remind me of my worthless Stock in K-Mart just before the fall.

As far as sticking more stuff on the forum header goes I think they would be better off archiving everything older that 6 months. It is getting more difficult to find a specific item every day. The forum is becoming a second helpdesk for checking and submitting tickets. This in itself may be slowing down the process by piling on progressive confusion.

As far as the migration goes I have not heard anything from WestHost. It does not seem the forum is getting any hits from users that sound like they have been migrated for the most part. The update did seem to imply that although they where shooting for the October 10th date that it was not set in stone and that they would announce when they knew for sure... or at least that is how I read it.

I agree with you that the forum needs to be pruned back it is getting harder to find stuff. There is a lot of info that is ols that could be of use so using the auto prune feature would get rid of that. This means that they would really have to do a manual prune and I imagin they just have not had the time. Perhaps they could do it bit by bit... say every time they visit the forum they get rid of just a few thread. It may be they are doing this but that it is so nomimal that it is hard to see.

Someone at WH today told me that the rest of the migrations would "probably not be by next week." So if you are holding your breath, don't. It sounds to me like they want to get all of the problems and questions from the first set of migrations worked out before they start the next batch.
While activity on the board has slowed down, there is still a pretty good wait time on the phone and it sounds like support tickets are not being answered right away.
My guess is that they'll wait until support requests get down closer to normal before they decide to do anymore.

As for the timezone suggestion, I think it's a great one, though I don't know how realistic it would be to carry out, especially for sites that have a worldwide audience. I think it would also be difficult to balance the server load and move existing sites around.

Christopher,

I'm glad WH is talking to someone. I'm not holding my breath, I'm still on 1.0 and nothing works I can log in but thats about it, fortunatly I have nothing there that can't be replaced.

It was scheduled for the 10th and stated a schedule would be posted as the date approached. I don't care if the schedule said it would be completed 1 Jan 2004. I do care that lately self imposed suspenses are missed without explanation.

Know anyone that needs K-Mart pink sheet wall papering?
