cable modem startup problems

I have a G5 running OS X 10.3.5 It is connected to a cable modem. When connected to the modem the G5 hangs at startup. It freezes saying either "waiting for network file system," "waiting for printing services," or "waiting for login window." Once it hangs up, no recourse but to turn it off and restart. When I start without it being connected to the cable modem, no problem. Then I can plug in the modem and all works just fine. I can (and do) continue to do this but I sure would like to know what's going on.

sounds like your g5 is looking for network services that you cable modem, obviously doesn't offer. I don't use cable modem, but usually they are all connected to a router that dishes out dhcp, etc.

run the "network setup assistant", it's in the network control panel/preferences... under the "assist me" button.
