Not a clue, it is almost like it decides that someone has defended in the previous round of combat and it had better be you.

Yes and no ... on the technical side I'd like to know the hows whys, as a player I just need to know that the system works and is fair (or fair enough).

I had the same thing happen in a recent battle. If you check- even though the text says you defended, the damage was still applied to your character correctly. There is a bug there, but I'm not too concerned about it.

It is one of those balance things, I think. When it hits, it hits
hard - as hard or harder than an equivalent Fighter hitting a Mage? That I dunno, but I suspect so. Thus the less chance of a strike I guess.
