westhost48 - is this a 'starter server'?

I know this is a tech supp question but I thought someone here might know the answer faster. :)

I help with a client occasionally, who's hosted at westhost48, and they need a form, blah blah. However I find I can't telnet in with putty or run php scripts on this account.

Is there a westhost starter account so "small" that it doesn't run php or include telnet access?

thanks,
blake

As far as I know, SSH (and not Telnet) is standard with all accounts at WestHost, no matter what server. I believe PHP is installed globally too. It might be that the server was experiencing problems at the time you last tried. When you say you can't get in or run a PHP script, are you getting some kind of error message or what?

In regard to your php issue... Do you need to install Mod_php via the Site Manger for your php to work. From what I understand that is needed if you are combining php and html. You should be able to check this out quickly by going to (http://yourdomain.com/plugins/php-test/test.php). If you do not have that page on the site then I belive it means Mod_php has not been installed. If not you can find it under Site Applications > Development in the Site Manager. If it is installed and you can not access the page I would imagine it means there is something wrong with the way the account is set up and maybe support should be contacted to check it out.

Good info, thanks. In this case the test.php is not found and (I should have mentioned this before) the domain does not appear to have Site Manager at all.

So I guess there might be something wrong with the account, hmm? I guess this is a question for tech support.

Thanks, guys.

Shawn, I believe the account Blake was talking about is a 1.0 account, so none of that useful stuff will work for him anyway!

Blake, you never answered whether it is error messages you are getting or if it just plain doesn't work?

Sorry. :)

When I upload PHP files it simply doesn't display them; gives me a 404 error. When I try to login via PuTTY I get some kind of CRC error. Odd.

I log into other Westhost accounts daily via PuTTY so it isn't that.

Hmm, sounds like maybe the config has been messed with ;) Is there a "php" binary (file) in the cgi-bin directory for that account? If not, it might have been removed accidentally, and is the reason PHP no longer works. As for the SSH problems, I don't recall having access to any files on 1.0 (or 2.0 for that matter) that could mess up SSH access - as far as I know, those files are located outside each "actual account"... Anyway, keep us updated as to what WestHost says.

Hello All,

To confirm what FZ said, the account will not have a site manager unless it is on our 2.0 system.

Blake, has php been installed on your account? You can install this yourself via the control panel on your account, or if you'd like to post/email the domain name I can run some troubleshooting on it for you to determine this problem.

how come server 69.36.161.138 is not listed in netstatus.westhost.com?
