Jabber/XMPP Server on VPS

At home, I have an iMac G5 with Mac OS X 10.4.5 (client). I have a VPS account and would like to make use of my Domain name by setting up a jabber/xmpp server for my domain name on my VPS. I have basic computer skills and understand how to use terminal (when following written instructions) and so on, but I have no idea how to go about setting something like this up. I did a google search for "Jabber server" and there are several software programs that I can supposedly download and use, but I'm not having much luck setting one up because it's not quite as simple as downloading a mere application for my iMac that can just be copied to my applications folder - it involves setting some things up on the VPS in ways that I don't have the knowledge/experience to do so. Basically it comes down to this: I have a domain name, I have a VPS account,?and I would like to set up a Jabber/XMPP server on this VPS...is there anyone that can help me get started with this?

Well your first step would be to contact WestHost and ask if you are allowed to install it. :) It sounds like something they may not allow. I know we can not run an IRC server on our accounts and this sounds similiar. Could be that it does not take the resources that an IRC would so they may allow it.
