help a computer newbie with basic seo stuff

I used WebSiteCreator (Lite) to create the front end of my site (& oscommerce) Though I used WSC initially, I have done some custom page redirects and no longer actively use WSC- so the changes do not get overwritten.
I have a small site for people into a certain kind of bird. Its not a huge competitive market so it shouldn't be a huge problem to improve my page rank. (yeah right!)
When I check/compare my site with others that are similar (trying to improve page ranking) I find that my site brings up no title, no description-actually not much. I have checked with web site grader and it tells me I have too many keywords and meta tags.
I have several questions:

1.still using wsc for the templates-where in my files can I add info like hidden cell keyword in < h1> tag.
2.any recommended sites that over reasonable price help on things like this?
3. oh theres more than 3 but that will not over confuse me for now!!!
Thanks
Susan

pretty quiet here...hello?

purplemartinart,
Try not to get discouraged when form posts are not answered in a few days, I myself try to visit the forms at least once a day, but theres no way for me to go to work, go to school and do everything else I do plus answer a bazillion questions all in a few days. Anyway for SEO things, generally I read this blog (and blogs/pages that he links to): http://jameseo.com/
Unfortunately for you, I have never had to deal with SEO optimization or ranking. All my sites have been personal or the few websites I have created have been private sites/back ends to sites so they have never needed any sort of SEO optimization. I will try to read up more on it for you and try to get you a definite answer, keep asking those questions.

Sorry I have not replied to this sooner. I am not sure I understand all your questions.

You really don't want to add any type of "hidden" information since search engins well detect this and count off on your ranking for it. You do want to make sure that any keywords that you do use are also within the text content of your site. Placeing some of them within <h1> tags can help since an SE well see those as "more important".

Don't be drawn into sites or companies that say they can increase your page ranking for a price. In the long run you are going to lose out. :) It takes time for a ranking to grow and one of the most important things you can do to help your rank is to get sites that are about the same subject as yours to link to your site. The higher the rank they have the better for you. Don't spam them but see if you can find other sites willing to do this.

I am not sure what that is all about. Your catalog pages seem to be fine in this regard. Your other pages do have more but they still don't appear to me to be too many. You do want to list the "most important" keywords first. SE's don't rely on keywords or descriptions as much as they used to and tend to look closer at the actual content of sites. At the moment your description seems to be a list of keywords and not actually a true description of your site. You may want to make that change. That is on your regular pages not on your catalog pages. In fact have a look at the source of your catalog pages and perhaps use that as a guide.

Right now your .html pages are named with numbers. For example your Home page is 501.html. It would be better if the names of the files reflected better what the page was about. For example you could rename it purple_martin_gifts.html. Ofcourse you would also need to change all the page links in your other pages to match that.

I did not know I could rename the pages...
I have been (with some success) getting some links from other sites.
In WSC there are no <h1> tags to put this info-or I just dont see them...let me take another look...

<h1> -<h6> are tags used in the body of your page. http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_hn.asp
