How Cool Is This?

The forum? Not cool at all.

Dear Admins,

Quit selling out. We have about 2000000 things that need to be done before we make forums for things a majority doesn't use.

Signed,

Dev Shed

"lol", there is no rep in the bought and paid for forums ;)

Apparently we have a lot of long time moblin developers who have simple been waiting around for these forums to be created:

HJenkins (http://forums.devshed.com/member.php?u=274063) apparently registered 1 year ago. A search (http://forums.devshed.com/search.php?do=finduser&u=274063) of posts by him indicate that he posted for the first time yesterday. Amazingly, despite that fact, his post count is currently 103. His member ID is #274063. This is also rather amazing considering that member #274062 registered just a few days ago.

JanythF (http://forums.devshed.com/member.php?u=274060), FranckGz (http://forums.devshed.com/member.php?u=274061), AzerothG (http://forums.devshed.com/member.php?u=274064) and PGinsuP (http://forums.devshed.com/member.php?u=274065) also have "invisible" posts and somehow managed to snag member IDs 1 year in advance.

Also. Who the **** names a forum "How Cool is This?"? How is that even a remotely descriptive forum name. At least the blackberry forum$ have plausibly realistic names and descriptions. Whichever PR person wrote these obviously got their target audience seriously confused - anyone who starts a topic title with "OMG" is not a programmer. They should have bought some ad space on facebook instead.

BTW:

Why ... so .... hard? It's...

That's what she said.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I believe that we are in the midst of an international conspiracy(albeit a poorly conceived and executed one).

Administrators, really, come on. Really? The amount of credit that you give your forum members is quite astonishing. Forgetting the fact that there are some very smart, regular posters here, we all know who posts on these forums.

Saying that, perhaps it is not the blue posters, perhaps there is some diabolical mastermind at the underground lair, cracking the whip.

You know the owners of this forum can do with it whatever they like. That's what owner means. I don't particularly care for this new advertising style but since I'm not paying for membership here I'm just as willing to shut up about it and let them do what they will to make money.

The owners of this forum are treating it like a billboard. The reason they are doing it is because the user base is so strong, which makes this forum so popular, ergo a good advertising platform.

If they abuse this forum too much, the permanent users will migrate and their advertising platform will collapse like a badly cooked flan.

I agree. This is ridiculous. These users were manually added and given a post count of 100 so that they would fall into the regular user group. Wtf?

I never had any trouble with flans collapsing. Souffles sometimes.............

Soufflés, we hates them all!

So where do we all go when the shed finally goes under? It looks like pretty soon we will be given manditory signatures that say "I love the balckberry"

DevArticles? It's really slow around there though. Like, really slow. DevHardware, CodeWalkers...

Or, you know, off the DS network, like SitePoint.

The one good thing this Moblin stuff has done: the PHP forum now isn't at the top. Theoretically this section will start getting the I'm-too-lazy-to-try-to-find-the-right-forum posts and spam.

So

Bull's balls.

spam is spam, whether it comes from a troll or from admin

But this represents the begaining of a slipery slope, and it's not likly to be productive. There are other technical forums.

However, I have received an explanation from the admins concerning this. Here's a portion of the email sent to a few of the moderators who have posted in this thread.
I just wanted to drop everyone a quick e-mail. I understand that everyone thinks DevShed is selling out by adding the Moblin and BlackBerry forums, and I wanted to address those concerns here.

First, they are indeed sponsored forums. As I am sure you will appreciate, it costs money to run Developer Shed, and from time to time we do take sponsorship as a way to keep the network up and running. What I want to be clear about though is that this does not make the forums or their content any less legitimate; in fact, it serves to expand what we already have. The only thing that makes it a bad forum is people posting bad/negative content to it. There are plenty of iPhone, Moblin, and BlackBerry developers out there who can use the content and the forums as a tool to grow their knowledge, and hopefully we can help fullfill this need.

As for the users who have been posting with the automatic "100" thread count, they are people who were assigned to get conversations started in the forums. Their thread count is not meant to deceive, but more a technical matter; users are not allowed to post links until they have 100 posts in the forums.

In the spirit of growing the community, I am hoping you guys will understand the reason for sponsored forums, and also realize that, with your help and time, they can also be a great addition. In lieu of that, I am asking that you delete any negative comments and refrain from them in the future. We all want the forums to be a place where developers can come and learn, and with your cooperation we will be on that path.Although admittedly, my response to this email has not received any feedback. So I guess it is what it is.

i received a similar e-mail - i couldn't be bothered to respond

all i can say is, it's hard to gain the moral high ground if you sell your soul for money

Just like last time, except this time we are being asked to self-censor ourselves instead of having our posts deleted.

No we don't. You're making a mess out of our forums, treating them like a billboard by adding advertising forums that will never be used.

I just don't get why you guys care so much. Its not like this is the only developer board in the world. If you don't like it then go join another or build your own.

I never had any trouble with flans collapsing. Souffles sometimes.............

And what of flans in cupboards?
'Course I suppose those collapse slowly...
