I was poking around the android development site last night wondering where to begin seeing as I don't have a phone yet and came across development phones. Has anyone bought one of these and tried it out? I plan on getting a droid at some point but mostly I want to develop for it so does it make more sense to buy a dev phone or buy from verizon?
i would suggest you buy a real phone, and just use emulators for development.
Unless you have some extra cash... :)
That's the way I was going. I actually looked up the Eris a little so I might buy that because I'm really cheap and I really have no need for a smart phone at this point.

I think it should be pointed out that ANY android phone can be used as a development phone. The only real difference between a "development" phone and a regular phone is that the regular one is locked to a specific carrier. Developing on a Device (http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/device.html)
I would also add that while extremely useful, designing entirely on the emulator is a bad idea. Nearly every phone available has its own little nuances which can make development tricky. For example, on my HTC Hero, the camera preview doesn't work correctly in portrait mode, so I have to force it to landscape mode to work correctly.
