Phplist coders needed

1) Project Details: (be as specific as possible):

There is an opensource email broadcasting software known as phplist. I have it installed on my site and use it and it works just fine. However, what it does not do is allow an webmaster to set up an autoresponder. What this means is that the webmaster can pretype messages, and once a user subscribe to a specified mailing list they will then be given the messages on a set number of intervals that the webmaster wish.

2) Payment Amount: Im willing to pay $200 USD for the job once it is completed nicely. I have lots of feedback as a buyer on freelance service,s but im not looking to work with small companies anymore, i wnat to work with an single programmer that can be dedicated to me for the course of the time. If the project is done nicely then you can expect more jobs as i have several of ideas to do. I will maintain the full ownership of the plugin and will sell it for commerical purposes.

3) Payment method/ details (Paypal, check? Timeline?): Payment done via paypal, would like to have the project done in 10 days.

4) Additional Info (about project or potential bidders):

Coders can set their own pacing but i will need deialy updates via skupe. Coder must have skype. I need this add on script to work on all linux and windows servers.

There are actual some extensions made, but i believe they are buggy.

Here are the locations of teh scripts for the coder to check out:http://mantis.phplist.com/view.php?id=7321 or

Hey Micheal, i just sent you an email, thanks.

Ok, will i guess i will use this thread to keep everyone updated and to also let them know that im a trusted webmaster to work with.

1. dianoetics/ Micheal has been chosen for the project. I can tell he is smart and he has been working on this i believe 5 days ago, we talked for the first time around 7 days ago and believe he was planning on what he was going to do then.

2. Two days ago, he stated that he has completed the script and that he wouldnt continue working until some payment was sent, so i sent him $100 USD via paypal.

3. The script was buggy so he said he would fix it and record a screencast that day but didnt, must of been busy.

4. Up until today, still havent received any updates, the script i have is buggy.

I will update this thread oncethe project is finished, until the mean time and once i build up a reputation of being an reliable buyer, as i outsource at various of freelance services, i may consider not paying until the project is completed and until the coder can prove that the script is tested and working, as if even half of te script is comleted it still wont help me very much. Once the script/software is done i send the coder the full payment, do any coder think that im being unfair here? I know not everyone may not agree with me but i think this is reducing the risk management from my side, but i would also like to make the coder feel safe as well. Perhaps sometype of written contract will work?

I usually require some sort of deposit before I begin work. The deposit is usually a percentage of the estimated quote I give. The problem here is the member who posted saying they could do the job only has 2 posts on the forum. In my opinion its usually better to go with someone who has a better reputation on the forum. Here rep and thank yous stand for a lot.

20-50% deposit up-front is fairly standard.

Reading your original post, you make a lot of demands for $200. IMO, with such a low budget, you really can't afford to be so picky/demanding.

Yeah, i know, but the member has a good resume, just new to this forum, like myself.

Sorry, but i DO NOt agree with you at all. Im not picky, and didnt make many demands at all, in matter of fact, im very easy going and let the coder set their own schedule as i dont like to micromanage, my only requirement is for them to update me on their progress daily with a quick email, Thats why many of the freelancers i work with on freelance services love working with me on a constant basis, i treat people the way that i would like to be treated. If you think im demanding, then i hate to see ouw ork for some of other webmasters on freelance services like elance, guru.com, or rentacoder.

You contradict yourself:

my only requirement is for them to update me on their progress daily with a quick emai

No-one could guarantee you this, let alone for $200

Not to mention:

And of course theres this:

I will maintain the full ownership of the plugin and will sell it for commerical purposes.

So you need someone who:
1. Has skype and is willing to call you every day with updates (presumably at no extra cost)
2. Can get the job done and test on every possible linux and windows server and configuration at short notice
3. Not take any deposit up-front
4. Have no problem with getting only $200 for something you're planning to sell commercially

Sure, you're not at all picky.

Hmm, well the coder headphones didnt work, so we were unable to chat on skype, but we still messaged each other live on there that day.

Secondly, both parties have skype, they can call each other free from anywhere in the world?, So, i dont understand what you mean at no extra cost, makes zero sense to me.

My coder was actually not happy at me because i wasnt avilable on skype because im taking sumer courses at my university and they have a firewall to block im applications, so maybe everyne has their own perfernces.

I will admit fault to that as i meant that once they are chosen for the job we will need to chat on skype about what the plan is, and from there they can do their own thing as long as they send daily updates.

What you are failing to understand is I DO NOT expect anyone to work on a project for 10 days, what i expect is for them to set their OWN SCHEDULE and get the project done in that time frame.

A ten day deadline doesnt mean that the coder works on the job for ten days. I want to work with idnivduals not teams, and understand that people have a social life and that they may have date sets for other events in their life.

OR, they may be working on other coding projects as well because i know thats how it works from experience. So, thats why i set it for that time frame, i allow a lot of extra time.

Secondly, isnt testing a script a part of being a coder? If you think that is being too picky then i would recommend finding another hobby. If it works with phplist then it should meet those requiierments anyhow, but software and scripts can have bugs at times.

Third, do you expect to go into a job, and get paid upfront without doing any work? In most countries, no. I already stated i gave the coder half of the payment even when i havent received anything that i could use, and im still being picky? WOW.

I was just thinking about for future projects on how i can reduce the risk on borth parties side as im a trusted buyer with PERFECT feedback on a respected freelance sites.

Also, jsut because im going to sell it commerically doenst mean i will make any money. Im just a college studnet doing this on the side. Im not a big company, or anything like that, and selling scripts and software online requires an advertiisng/marketing budget and lots of time.

If it is so easy then every coder would be an online entrepenur, it is not easy at all, and if you think so, you try it and tell me how much you made back from your time and investment.

Last, if you have any suggestions to add about reducing risk management on both party sides like _Aerospace_Eng_ did then feel free to do so, other how, you are just cluttering up my thread with your off tangent opinions and taking it off the core topic.

Update dianoetics posts under another username which is ThinkMedical, avoid at all costs, highly not recommended. If my money is not refunded then i will take appropriate action to get my money back. Avoid him at all costs, a big waste of time that nags and puts faults on others for not completing his work. He will leave you when you need something done by a certain date and posts under different user names to get new jobs without finishing the ones he started once he got your money!

How to do you know that ThinkMedical is also dianoetics?

I've really no idea.

Regardless I sent you (tokio) the phplist project wednesday afternoon GMT with some explanations and extra info. I posted here i believe just after i sent you the email then i went "out of town" to collect some belongings from university. I am on a friend's computer at the moment checking in to see if you have the project, i came here first (surfing) and i find this... mess. I do not know if the email i sent went thru' (as im not at my computer, it may very well be in my outbox). In any case, I have other work to do at the moment and im very busy with Physics (I come on here and accept small project work) I've now no interest in continuing to do business with you and *will* refund you $100 in the next two days.

As a side note, the last archive i sent you is a working complete copy of the software with one file needing adjusting (immediate.php i believe) it has a "static" local address (@localhost) in place of one pulled from the DB. There is an automatic installer included with that package and you should be able to follow the documentation easily enough so that with a small adjustment you will have a complete and working product. I would recommend hiring another PHP coder (for no more than $50 - 100) to make the appropriate adjustments, and advice you should you want to change what i have written in some way.

I would like to say to any people reading here, that I have sent ~102 files totalling ~0.5MB to tokio, and these files (save for one minor modification) meet and exceed in a number of ways, the requirement of the project. I would also like to point out that i am refunding the $100 paid so far, so that tokio has all of this for free. I would estimate that the time i have spent on this project so far would cost (in terms of the payment i get on site, UK) $400 *at least*. The backend is almost entirely OOP PHP5 (sans one cron script) and utilises various OOP best-practices.

If anything taking on this project for $200 and actually delivering even half (ney all) makes me if not somewhat insane then at least full of the milk of human kindness.

re 1, i went on skype at least once everyday, not that i could find tokio when i needed too, which was a little annoying at sometimes as i had to improv the GUI.
re 2, of course i didnt do that, but i ran it on Fedora and Vista, and the nature of the project meant that largely if the source app (phplist) could run then so could my plugin
re 3, i understand people who do not like the idea of this, most of the people i have worked with freelancing have had bad experiences working with PHP coders (alas)
re 4, because phplist is GNU i actually was so kind as to write all the code independently of phplist and include that in the $200, i went so far as to reduce all changes to phplist to two include statements

i have my own online buisness (that a former client gave me, for my abilities in maintaining its code base, and his lack of time) which brings in some money every week and being in the UK (and a student) i get enough money from the Gov. to cover my rent and bills. So i code mainly out of interest and for a little money to buy some more books or clothes, which is why i didnt mind the $200.

To tokio:

I transferred the $100 you sent me into my bank when you sent it, transferring it back will take ~5days. Rather than do that I have another small project on which may be completed in 3 and i can pay you back from that. So expect the money in the next 5 days at most.

I'd email you but there's an arp spoofing virus on the uni network and it's doing some weird things with popular login pages (gmail, hotmail, yahoo, and others).

I've really no idea.

Dude, cut the BS. The only thing you sent me was A LOT of bugs, complaints, and headaches. You never responded back to the last several emails I sent you but yet you have time to post here under a different user name looking for work when you told me you were busy! You are a liar and looked like a would have been scammer.

You would just keep posting here under different usernames looking for more work. I have zero intentions of working with someone like you will never recommend any of your services to anyone.

I haven’t got my money back so I will be taking appropriate actions today, and once I get my money back I will find a real coder that wont rip me off, waste my time, give me bunches of headaches, and then make up all of these BS stories. You told me that you would fix the script last Sunday but you ignored all of my emails but yet have the time to post from your “friend’s” house looking for new work!

If the script was not far away from being fixed then why didn’t you do it? Exactly, Whatever dude. PS, I know for fact that diabotenics and thinkmedical are the same posters-- mods should be able to check this, it’s a simple secret of mines that I chose not to reveal because it will make people like him learn from his mistakes and fix them in the future which could put other members at risk of being ripped off.

If your PayPal is hooked dup to your bank account and if your bank account has enough funds, then you can send payments via PayPal and PayPal will then take the rest of your funds from your bank.

It's been fun but maybe this can go to PMs now...

OK. But i'd like to say publicly that the $100 has been refunded and hopefully that can close the whole issue privately and here on the forum.

Apologies to CodingForums for being host to such nonsense.
