First Guinea Pig!

Hi All,

Guess I'll be the first one to ask for critique.

Have a look at my site and please let me know what you think - any and all suggestions/tips/help will be appreciated. www.BirdHouses-BirdFeeders.com (http://www.birdhouses-birdfeeders.com/index.htm)

Thanks.

Lynn,
I like your site, the only thing I would change is the long Web site name, you might want to get one without the hyphen. something easy to remember.

Otherwise its great!, I like the wood buttons. : )

You might want to put some birds on the site. 8)

Keep up the great work.

My first thought on seeing the home page is - where are the birdhouses? I'd get some nicer (bigger, less jaggy) images and put them above the fold. Seeing an attractive product will create that birdhouse craving you're after.

cheers,

If I had to be picky, I would say that maybe it would be good to use the same font. I notice you have a few different fonts on your site. It's not a big deal, mostly just personal preference (I bet theres others out there that will say you should use more fonts :) ) I also agree with what the others have said too. You have the content there, but maybe bigger pictures and a shorter name would help. Maybe a bird housey background would add some color to the site too :)

Minor suggestion: don't use underlining for emphasizing text. It adds confusion because the user may think that it is a hyperlink.

I've got a question.

I'm just wondering, why did you choose to use a constant size table on the front page. The constant size stops to content from resizing when I resize the window. I guess this is just a nit-pick though. Other than that, I like this site.

Lynn -

Suggest running site through validator, cleaning up errors and then making your style changes using style sheets. May also want to drop javascript. Validator is here: http://validator.w3.org/ You're going to need a DTD at top of each page (available at w3.org). Good luck.

Forgot to add, if you have trouble wading through w3.org there is a good tutorial site with easier to follow specs and validator here: http://www.htmlhelp.com/

I would like to thank everyone that took the time to look at my site and comment. I will definitely be looking to make some changes based on your comments.

I guess I should have also warned you before that this is my first attempt at a website on a "stand alone" basis. I've put together a site with the host's online editor - but this my first with a normal HTML editor (1st Page 2000).

To answer some of your questions and comments:

joelphil - thank you for your comments - I created the wood buttons myself in PaintShopPro. Bird photos are coming up soon.

alien and jdbaker - I'll see what I can do about better photos on the home page - and in better position. Thanks.

cds3 - I know what you mean - I've been debating myself whether or not to remove that underline for Free Shipping. Guess the debate is over!

torrin - I didn't really decide - I used a template and I didn't know the difference. Part of being a newbie developer I guess. I wanted to make sure the site was accessable for older browsers without the need to scroll. I wouldn't know how to make it non-constant! Thanks for your comments.

samp - Thanks for your comments. I just started studying about CSS and plan to try to make changes in the site going forward. I don't know what DTD is but I'll look for them at w3.org and also have a look at the other site you mention.

Thank you all once more. Been a learning experience and I hope to glean a lot more from these forums going forward.
