What is the best software for creating transparencies from artwork and photos? All suggestions welcomed and appreciated.

No question about it, it's Adobe Photoshop. Any version from 4 on will be able to do transparent gifs (I think in the earlier versions it's called GIF 89A or something like that). The newest version (7.0 as of today May 6 2003) makes it EXTREMELY easy to make transparent gifs. I would say that Adobe PhotoShop as a whole is harder to use than most programs, but that's because it's way way more powerful. Once you get the basics down, you'll never go back though...

Do you mean real transparencies (as in "slides") or are you talking about creating Web graphics and transparent GIFs?
I'm referring to web graphics, azam, and many thanks for the Adobe suggestion, jdbaker... do 'ppreciate it.

I use Macromedia Fireworks which came with my Macromedia Suite. I also hear a lot of people like Paint Shop Pro .. both a well suite for web graphics.
If all you are doing is graphics for the web them Photoshop Elements would be more of a economical choice that the full Professional version of Photoshop whic has more tools suited for working involving print publications.
Photoshop is to standard when dealing with professional printers but if you are doing just web stuff then Photoshop Elements or one of the others I mentioned might work better if you are on a budget.

Yes, David, your right. At least for the moment, I'm just looking to create a transparent gif. And, linker, many thanks for the additional suggestions. It helps to have options to compare.

If you only want to do something fairly basic, a free or shareware/demo program may be all you need. Try searching for "free graphics software" and similar at Google.com.
