Name-based vs. IP-based

Can anyone help me understand the pros and cons of each as a reseller?

Hi MacToph,

There are only three reasons why you would NEED an IP based VDS vs a Name based VDS with our Reseller packages. They are:

1. If you plan on purchasing your own SSL certificate to use with your domain name for SSL (secure server pages) or if you already have your own SSL certificate on an existing account that you will be moving to your reseller package.

2. If you will be using Anonymous FTP (file sharing) for your visitors, this is not possible under name-based hosting.

3. If you plan on running scripts that require a unique IP on the VDS.

Other than that, there shouldn't be any problems/differences in using Name based VDS's over IP based ones. I hope that helps!

I can think of a fourth possible reason to use an IP-based VPS:

To isolate an account from any possibility that other account users on a shared IP could do things (like sending SPAM) to cause the IP to be blacklisted. When this happens, it doesn't matter which account under the IP caused the IP to be blacklisted, it affects all accounts under that IP.

For those who don't know, when an IP is blacklisted, many mail server SPAM filters will refuse to accept email from that IP address.
