POP before SMTP?

Is it still the case that mail can only be sent if the POP server has been polled within the last xx mins (30 mins?)?

Some of my clients have a real problem with sending emails and I wonder if that is the cause.

Yes it is still the case....but as long they have Outlook/Express set to send/recieve every 5 minutes or so, this should not be a problem. Most e-mail clients, as far as i am aware, have options to automatically send and recieve every x minutes, so if your clients are having issues, they should make sure that they are doing that. If you continue to have issues, you may want to write into support with more details of what is going on, when, how, etc. and we should be able to get you taken care of.

Outside of the US it is not so common to have a full time connection.

A typical scenario is: connect, collect mail, disconnect, compose and reply, connect, send mail, error sending, collect mail, send mail.

That is how it works for me and now I'm used to it, but some clients can't understand why it should be like that.
Is there not a possibility to use the name and password settings for SMTP as well?

The best I can suggest is checking to see if your e-mail client will allow switching the order that it performs those operations (POP before SMTP). If the client doesn't support that, then they will just have to understand that it is a security feature to prevent spam.
