I know they are there, and I can upload new ones and they work as expected, but I do not see them listed, either through Putty or any of my 4 different FTP clients. AAMOF, I can't see any files that beging with a dot. I know I used to see them and when I first noticed they disappeared, I blamed it on the new FTP client I got, but trying all the old clients and Putty, I see it must be something on the server. I also maintain other sites hosted by you and cannot see them on those sites either. Is there a way I can tell the server to allow me to see them? Thanks!
When using putty, instead of using 'l' or 'ls', do 'ls -al' to get a complete listing. In whichever ftp client you are using, you will need to look around in your settings for a "Show hidden files" option to check so that dot files are displayed. If you are unsure of how to do so, please contact the software vendor of the FTP client you are using.
Thanks for the tip for Putty, I can see the hidden files just fine. But I still cannot see them with any of my FTP programs! I know for a fact that I used to be able to see them with 2 of my 4 FTP clients. One of those clients has no setting for showing or hiding hidden files. The other one has a setting "Hide files starting with a '.'" and it's unchecked. I'm sure I have the settings correct, yet I'm unable to see the hidden files. The other 2 FTP clients, I've never been able to see the hidden files, even though I've also change the settings so that the hidden files should be visible.
If it helps any, the first FTP program is WS_FTP LE version 5.08. I cannot find any setting to control whether files beginning with a "." are hidden or not. The second program is AceFTP 1. It has the setting "Hide files starting with a '.'" which I've unchecked. The third program is AceFTP 3 Free. It also has a setting like the version 1, which I have unchecked. Lastly, I have Dreamweaver MX, which has a FTP client built in. There is a setting "Display Files Marked as Hidden" which I have checked.
I find it strange that I am unable to get any of these FTP clients to show the hidden files. Especially since I know for a fact that two of the clients used to show them! Also, I'm not seeing the hidden files for any of the sites I have access to, which are all hosted by westhost. These are tron-x.com, firstlist.com, xtrastore.com, starfirecollectibles.com and castlegolfaz.com. Unfortunately I do not have access to any sites that are hosted outside westhost for comparision.
With WS_FTP Pro you can display hidden files by typeing in -la or -al in the Remote File Mask which is found in the Avanced Properties then Startup area of the options for connecting to the site. I do not belive this is availabe in the LE version . You maybe able to do it on the fly with the LE version. Look for a textbox under the MkDir button. If it is there on the Remote side you type in -la or -al and it will display the hidden files.
Thanks for the help with WS_FTP! It also works for the LE version. Funny, I don't remember ever having to type that, but it's been a long time since I've used that program. Anyway, now I know the problem is definitely on my end. I really want to be able to see these files using AceFTP 3 and DW. So I guess I'll just have to dig a little deeper. Just wanted to make sure it was not something westhost blocks or something like that. I've worked with hosts that block access to these files, and it's pretty aggravating! Thanks!
I did figure out how to set AceFTP 3 to see hidden files. There are TWO settings to change! Not only do you have to uncheck the setting I mentioned earlier, but you also have to set the Folder Listing Command Parameter to Show Hidden Files which adds -latr parameter.
Still haven't figured out DW. I'm thinking it doesn't support it. That's OK, because I'm not likely to be using it when editing .htaccess files anyway.
