VBulletin or PHPbb

Hi I am putting up a forum (informational) and expect up to 400 users.
Can anyone advise their experience.
After spending a day surfing forums it appears to me (novice) that VBulletin is more robust. I see several indications where people seemed to have moved up from PHPbb to Vbulletin.

Any help would be appreciated.

Disclaimer: I use phpBB on my site. I've never used vBulletin.

I just took a look at the sites for both vBulletin (http://www.vBulletin.com) and phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com), and I'm not seeing much difference when it comes to features.

In looks like vBulletin (http://www.vbulletin.com/features/) has a calendar and an administrative statistics page. I couldn't find that on the features page, I had to go in the admin demo to see this. In phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com/features.php) you get a much bigger community making mods and it's free to use and upgrade forever.

So vBulletin seems to have a few more features, but you pay for it. I can't comment on the robustness of it. My wife is a member of communities of both types and she hasn't noticed much difference in them. So I guess it's the old trade off of commercial vs. free software. Do you want to pay for commercial support or not?

Anybody else have anything to add?

vBulletin is by far more advanced in terms of the level of programming, and usability. This forum is running vBulletin.

using PHPBB3 , can't figure out how to create catagories, also it seems the forum topics don't display posts unless you click the topic.
Probably you get what you pay for!
PHPbb free with limited features
Vbulletin $150 a year (I think) more feature rich,
Hey anyone know how to display your forum page inside your Joomla website?

erotmil,

You questions about phpBB3 would be answered faster at the phpBB forum (http://www.phpbb.com/community/). I am pretty sure there is a mod available for integrating phpBB and Joomla. I think it is available via the Joomla site. Refrence (http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/3723/details) You might find other solutions by searching with the keyword Joomla over at the phpBB forum. Also don't forget the phpBB Documentation (http://www.phpbb.com/support/documentation/3.0/). I think that Creating and setting up forums (http://www.phpbb.com/support/documentation/3.0/quickstart/quick_forums.php) is the section you are looking for in regards to Categories as I think Forums is the term for Categories now in phpBB.

Just because it if free does not mean it is not good. :) I personally prefer either phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com/) or SMF (http://www.simplemachines.org/).
