Email Problems

I have having problems being able to use and external email client with any of the VDS accounts/domains I have created. My main one pulls just fine. The settings are the same for both my main and the other domain.

I can also look at them both just fine in Neomail

Any thoughts?

Does it timeout or does it give you a specific error or something? Someone else was having problems with mail accounts timing out, even though that person was on broadband (I'm on a slow connection so naturally timeouts happen for me as well)...

The POP3 session comes back saying bad syntax.

That's pretty messed up. I do get some odd errors once in a while, but never something like that. Have you tried using different mail clients for the account(s) in question? What mail client are you trying to use?

I finally found out that I had to use the full_username@domain.net for a username. Also POP before SMTP fails. You have to use plain text authenication to send messages.

Is this what everyone else has to do. When I had my regular account I only had to use the username not the complete email address.

Thanks

Yes, I believe with 2.0 it has been changed to username@domain for login name. And the POP3 before SMTP applies as well - though I read somewhere (perhaps the updates page) that it saves your IP address for 24 hours and that IP address can SMTP without having to POP3 first - or something. Not sure though. And I have always used plain text authentication...

I always use the full username plus the domain dot com as a username when accessing via an outside e-mail program. It is a bit strange because back when they where having problems with the Relaying Denide it was suggeted to have the account authenticate before sending out mail. With that you had to only use the username or it would not work.

1.0 used just the username. 2.0 you should use the full method. Was your regular account you mention on 1.0?

No it was 2.0

Inline with this topic, I realize that only lately I can use smtp same as my pop domain. before that I had to use my dial up ISP.
With regards to SSL for emails, do you all have it installed ? Havent tried, and I dont know how.

If you guys ever get 'bad syntax' or 'syntax error' when connecting via FTP or email to your VPS, ask yourself if this is a name-based account that it's on (shared IP, not dedicated). If so, then you are required to give the full email address as a username or userID for all cases for email or FTP connections.

This even includes using your VPS's outgoing mail server; you can turn on authentication, and use those same settings, and it should work (this actually is how you get around the POP-before-SMTP technology; supplying a password for SMTP trumps that).

As for SPA or SSL for email, currently it just isn't supported. If you'd really like to see something like that, let us know, however.

Yes thank you Mr. Fansworth. With regards to this I realize that with dedicated IP hosting, I don't have to check the " My server requires authentication " box. Didn't know that till 2 days back. :)
