What's the difference from VPS.NET?

Aren't both supposed to give you your own virtual server?

LWC,

Are you asking what the difference between the WestHost VPS and VPS.NET is? If so, there are many differences. The WestHost VPS offers root-like administration currently (although it is at end of life) and the VPS.NET offers full root access for a broader range of functionality. The VPS.NET also offers A LOT more flexibility and scalability. For example, with VPS.NET it is cloud hosting so you are not limited to a single server resources. You can purchase nodes and add on resources as your business expands or retracts. With VPS.NET you can assign several nodes (just a group of resources - ram, cpu, disk space, bandwidth, etc..) to one VPS or to multiple VPS's. The possibilities are really limitless. You can also schedule node bursts for certain days of the months (such as when you send out a newsletter) when you know traffic is going to increase to your site. The possibilities with VPS.NET are far superior and limitless.

If you have additional questions I highly recommend checking out the VPS.NET blog. There are many very helpful articles that discuss how VPS.NET works and some of the features you can get.

I hope this helps.

Don't be so hard on Westhost.

Depends what you want. As I see it:
Westhost 4.0 - good for simple websites. Westhost will keep the security patches up to date.
VPS.NET - good if you want greater flexibility and are computer literate.

Of course not. I'm in the Dedicated Servers' forum because I'm asking about the difference between them and VPS.NET. So what is that difference?

LWC,

WestHost offers fully managed dedicated servers. This is your own unique dedicated server where you have all of the resources you need at your disposal. With VPS.NET we are talking about "cloud" hosting. With cloud hosting you are not limited to the resources of just one server. Cloud hosting offers the flexibility and scalability to add on resources to meet the 'exact' needs of your business. With the VPS.NET/Cloud hosting you can easily and quickly scale up or scale down. While VPS.NET is an unmanaged solution we have worked hard to make it easier for less experienced users although it still takes some work. Also, VPS.NET offers a managed solution for an additional fee.

There are many businesses that may prefer to have their own dedicated server but there are also many that want to pay less with the ease of scaling quickly.

I hope this helps... If you still have additional questions feel free to contact us directly.

LWC,

One other thing I might add is that VPS.NET resources are allocated in what we call 'nodes'. A node is simply a set amount of resources (CPU, RAM, Disk Space, Bandwidth, etc..). You can purchase as many nodes as you like. There is no limit.

@thomaswilliams6, I am not sure what you are talking about. WestHost has no connection to vps.net aside from being a sister company. There should be no reference to it in the folder system here at WestHost. In fact I have an account over at vps.net also and not even sure what you are referring to in regards to that system. Then again I don't spend much time working with my account over there. Actually your this post and your other one kind of makes be wonder if you are simply a spammer. Can you confirm that you are not. :)
