Creating a web server on the PC

Hello everyone,
I have a question. Is there a way to configure my computer (pc, OS XP-prof), to immitate as a web server. For example create a directory in "MY DOCUMENT/MY WEBS" where I can create web sites projects. Using ASP, Perl, PHP, database query. I want to test out my coding before I upload to the host. Right now only way I can test the ASP pages is by uploading first. How can I install ASP, PHP, perl in a directory and run it like a web server? Are there sites that can guide me? [email protected]

I'm not too familiar with Windows XP - but I would imagine there's some sort of server software that comes on the XP CD.

For Windows 98 there's what's called the "Personal Web Server" Windows 2000/NT comes with IIS (Internet Information Server) as an optional install.. in both cases you can just go to the add/remove software thing in the control panel.

From there - select windows components and find the PWS

All of this is assuming there is one for XP...

If not, check the interenet and search for XP web servers.. if that doesn't help, you may want to think about switching to a different OS - or using a different computer with NT Server/Windows 2000, etc.

The Microsoft servers work really well with ASP (Considering ASP is a MS technology)

You can install the web server software which has IIS support from the Add/Remove Programs item in the Control Panel. Click the Option on the left hand side for Windows Components and then you should be able to find the place to install the web server software. I'd give you more exact instructions but I don't have an XP system handy right now.

What's most important though is that after you've installed IIS is that you also go to the Windows Updates site and install all the patches as well so you have the known (and fixed) vulnerabilities covered.

Thanks for the comments Roy, like I said, I don't have much experience with XP - so I wasn't sure about the IIS stuff for XP

Thanks

XP Professional comes with IIS/PWS and XP home edition does not and won't allow installation of it unfortunately without some complex hacks.

With IIS/PWS you can run your ASP files. For running PHP/mySQL stuff you can download Firepages PHPDEV package. You can find that here:

http://www.firepages.com.au/

Firepages is also moderator in this forum so if you have questions regarding that software you can post them here as well.

As for running Perl you can download the Perl software from their website. For questions regarding Perl and ASP please post those in the appropriate forums as we have forums for Perl, ASP and Other Serverside Issues.

if you want a really nice web serveur with a pretty GUI go to www.aprelium.com
and dont forget to read the guide about PHP + its free!

btw:no asp on this i think (but i havnt got a cle what asp is like)

I think the fact that xp home
does support a web server like IIS or pws is its greatest downfall besides the fact its security is awfull and thats an understatement. It takes away the greatest security feature of NTFS--PERMISSIONS!

I am now kicking myself for not paying the extra $99 to have xp pro on my new dell.

tip for the future: never buy anything Microsoft that says 'Home Edition' ;)

What they mean by 'home edition' is - cheap version of the software that will get your by, until you notice that what you really need it for, you can't use because it's the 'home edition' - thus causing you to buy the upgrade pack, thus making Microsoft twice as much money...

sorry, that's my rant :D

yeh well thats kr0$0f+ for you. its like the gaming industry: instead of a small patch or mod it's an "extension". how elegant. i think the worst though is the windows plus! pack. i refuse to speak to anybody here who bought that :D

Ok you all are getting off topic now. Remember this is not a chatroom. Please stick to the original topic or the thread will have to be closed.
