I'm trying to submit a real estate website (which is a commerical site) to Yahoo!, Lyocs, etc... and I keep on getting a message that I have to pay money to get special consideration for a commerical site. Is there any way to get around this because I thought that search engine submission could be free. Thank you.
Search engine submission can be done for free.. but, you get what you pay for (nothing)
Now, I wouldn't go as far as saying, the more you pay, the better the submission, but I garuntee you that if you pay a professional company to submit your site to the top SEs, you'll get a much better result than one of the free places...

Search google for tips and tricks on ranking your web site with search engines. The one thing I learned is to have patience. It took about 3 months before a site I worked on got well ranked on search engines. I would not call myself an expert but I know that I would not pay for something when there are plenty of resources out there to help.
There are free search engine submission services out there. One of the better ones is http://www.jimtools.com Only flaw is that your email address is automatically added to their newsletter, so keep that in mind when inputting it.
Actually Yahoo's directory is an annual payment directory, it is better if you submit you website other PR4 to PR5 web directories because most of them is free.
You can find online lists easily just do a google search for "web directories list" and you will find some.
There are free submissions....but if you use the paid versions, there are benefits....If you don't want the special features, don't go for paid versions and avoid the mails.

Search engine submissions have not been necessary for several years. You are far better of setting up a couple of links to a new site and let the search engine spiders find the site naturally.
Search engine submissions to hundreds or thousands of search engines has always been a scam and are useless. The only three that matter are Google, Yahoo and Bing and your site will get indexed more thoroughly if you simply set up a few links to the site from a site that gets indexed regularly.
@Jumpman, you are probably having a problem with Yahoo because you need to set up a Yahoo account. There used to be a free Yahoo submission option if you have a Yahoo account.
If you are having trouble getting search engines to index a new site, try a free pinging service, such as pingler.com. It works better than manually submitting to search engines.
