Wel there are a few options out there (PWS, Apache, et.), the one I'm currently using is Abyss web server:

It supports CGI and is easily configured for PHP (I did so with mine in under 5 mins.). Definitely worth a look ;).
PS: This thread will now be located in the "Other server side languages/ issues" forum for continuance where it is probably better suited as setting up a server to run on your computer is essentially a server side issue. Good luck ;)
yup get a server! the most used is apache but i would personnaly recomend abyss from aprelium soft (www.aprelium.com) its a great little serveur that supports php, cgi and stuff like that (alto .htaccess is coming soon) nice browser based GUI with little icon in the sytem tray. then you just have to transfer your pages into the webroot(this is the folder which is the highest a user can go on your colmputer) wich is by default called htdocs. then ypu open your browser and type http://127.0.0.1 or http://localhost and youll be in your computer. if that isnt what u were asking for then...ive jsuted wasted my time!

:) - like badblue - abyss is quite fun & I love the footprint! ...
but I would only recommend the above if you have no interest in server-side development, if you just want to serveup static pages to friends or maybe use for downloads etc then they are great (in fact better for low traffic) than apache / IIS etc
If however you want a server for server-side devlopment and testing then Apache or IIS is really the onlyway to go.
now I will tout phpdev (http://www.firepages.com.au/dev4.htm) but phptriad (http://www.phpgeek.com) or nusphere (http://www.nusphere.com) offer similar packages for apache/windows - or just get apache from http://apache.org , the default install is very secure.
if you are using ASP then IIS is the way to go.
DOH - just found out that phptriad is dead :(
I would recommend IIS if you want to be able to offer ASP. If you have on interest in ASP then I would recommend that you run apache. Thats what I run on my server and I haven't ever had any problems with it. But then again I run IIS on my PC and I ain't had any problems with it either.
