sex in a task bar

I unwittingly opened a file I downloaded from Morpheus and it was some sex program disguised as a midi file. This program auto added itself to my start menu as well as the task bar on the lower right hand side of my PC (where the clock is).

I know how to get rid of something that is in my start menu but I haven't figured out how to change what is in the task bar.

Help!....please

If your running Win9x it is simpler to fix.

Win9x:

Goto start > run > msconfig

Then goto the startup tab and see if you can find it in there.

NT/2000/XP:

Goto start > run > regedit

Then in regedit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Run

Then to the left see if it is there. If not, then go to

HKEY_LOCAL_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Run

Once you eliminate it from one of those places, then reboot and it should be gone.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the help.

When I got to the > Microsoft part of your instructions (I'm using XP) there was no 'Windows > CurrentVersion > Run '

When I go to the Microsoft folder and click on that it has a sub folder 'HFXSTB' and that has only one sub folder '0'

Also, there is no LOCAL USER folder.

follow-up

I followed a main folder called HKEY_CURRENT_USER and did find a file path like the one you described

When I got down to the 'run' folder a list of stuff appeared on the right. Those things are in my task bar. However the sex program I am trying to get rid of is not listed there. THe only one listed that I'm not sure of is one labled as '(Default)'.

What to dooooo?

Yeah i ment Current User not local user... sorry; an error on my part.

Hmmm if that doesn't work... things get complicated.

Its not (Default) cuz that is in every little Key/Folder in the registry.

Do you know like where the program is running from? Like the file name?

Try another thing, go into the task manager and go to processes and see if you find one that looks like it and hit 'End Process' but b4 you do that make note of the filename.

Once you end the process, file the file and delete it.

Ok. When you hold the cursor over the icon in the task bar the name of it pops up.

So, I ran a 'search' for that file name and that produced 3 results. I was able to delete two of them but the third, which is the .exe file refuses to budge. I get an error message saying 'access denied'

It is located in the C drive in the WINDOWS folder.

Any suggestions??

Thanks

Reboot, hit F8 as the system reboots then select boot into command prompt mode and delete it that way.

thank you

once I am in command prompt mode what do I do?

at the C prompt, type cd windows, then type del filename.exe

Filename is the name of that disgusting program :D

Good Luck!!!

since you're using XP you can use System Restore - just restore back to before you installed the thing, and it will be as if it was never there
