I just bought a networking hub and I have all of the hardware ready to go, but I can't remember how to add (configure) a network connection. My network consists of 2 machines one running 2000 and the other XP. My secondary computer is strictly for file backups. How do you create the network through "My Network"?
As long as the ip is configured correctly and you're in the same workgroup you don't need to do anything. It should autodetect. Also, you really don't need a hub with 2 computers, you just need to buy a cross-over (direct from computer to computer) cable instead of a patch (computer to hub) cable.
Through XP (Most likely the same for 2K):
Browse through "My Network Places" > "Entire Network" > "Microsoft Windows Network" then there should be a workgroup in this folder, probably named "Workgroup" open it and inside you should see a list of pc's. XP and 2000 automatically list themselves. 98 won't be listed until something is shared (ie: set up file/printer sharing).

right-click "My Network Places" or "Network neighborhood" and go into properties. Dig around. ;P
Trust me Celtboy, I've already tried that. I wouldnt have posted a question unless I've exhausted all of my ideas! I want to assign a drive letter to my back up machine. I'm beyond fustrated trying to figure it out myself.
when you want to map a network drive, you have to do the following:
on the file backup PC, right click on the folder you want to store all your backups in. you will see an option for 'Sharing', click on it and 'share this folder' and give it a share name.
when you have done this, on your normal PC right click on My Computer and you will see an option for 'Map Network Drive'. click on it and select a drive letter, and now browse for the folder you have shared or type '\\{filebackupcomputername}\{sharedfoldername}' eg. \\server1\backup
