How Do u make games

hello ppl

i Am Been Trying to make games i have failed and i know that u have to have a program to make one is there any free ones

Can anyone help

Err, C++ and DirectX are standard. OpenGL is crossplatform though...

I always wanted to "make games" until I realized how much work is actually involved. Not only do you either need to a) Write a graphics engine (typically in C++) or b) License an already-made engine for $$$, but then you also need to shell out money for 3d-modeling software, audio-creation, etc etc.

And I know I'm forgetting a lot of stuff in that. 2d games are much easier I would assume, but still generally require a knowledge of C++, or some other language with knowledge of a graphics library.

If you are serious about it, learn C++, and learn it well.

C++? how could i lern that i kdon't know where to go to see wat kind of thing it is... and is there any Free gamemakes programs???

There used to be a program called Amos on the Amiga for making games, never had it myself. There are a few packages about for making simple games.

Stuff like Quake and all that is a whole different ball game though...

i Have the gacpic thing done i just need a game maker program!!! i am just want to make games and put them on my site i don't want to make a 3d game becos i have just started i want to learn how to make games but frist i have to get a program and learn codes !! I have learn how to design sites still have a thew bugs with frames and someother stuff. And now i want to make games so i can put on my site!! can anyone help me with maybe a free Game maker

Umm, try RPGMaker?

that to make play station games !!! and i have dpwnloaded drietx or something like that and i have no idea how to use it.
Can anyone help:confused:

Befor starting with directx, learn c/c++ first. Then move on to Win32 api (to write windows programs). then start with Directx and after that, go with platform specifc games (like Playstation)

If you want to pogram in c/c++ you'll need a C compiler.
there are some free ones available on the net:
Borland (http://www.borland.com/)
djgpp (http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/)
Bloodshed (http://www.bloodshed.net/)

Or you can use MSVC++ but then you have to pay

Also pik up a book like "Teach Yourself C++ In 21 Days" I never used it, but I heard people talk about it, so don't shoot me if the book is bad ;). And also, don't takke the tilte to serious. you can't learn C++ in 21 days :D. You even won't learn all this stuff in a few months. It will take years. I don't want to discourage you here, I'm only saying the facts. But if you start learning C/C++ , then here are a few good forums when you have questions:
www.flashdaddee.com
www.cprogramming.com
with cprog, please, please read the FAQ and FAQ-board first. because when you ask a question that is allready in the FAQ, you'll get flamed. They are very nice people but when you have to answer the same questions every week, you would be a bit irritated.(And if you do get flamed, don't let it bother you)

You can do this, no doubt. The only thing you need is time and patience

if you don't even know what c++ is then I'd just give up on the idea of trying to make a game.... it'd be like trying to cook your dinner without knowing or understanding what the ingredience are or how to put them together.

my brother went to 5 years at Drexel University to learn the stuff you're talking about wanting to do.

i don't want to make 3d games right now or 2d i just want to make a simple game .

when you said on your site, did you mean that the user plays the game off of your site or donloads it as an .EXE?

Wanna learn C++ and lots more go to CodeWarrior University (http://www.codewarrioru.com)

P.S. No, its not my site ;)

yes mostly for my site and some downloadng

for embeded games you view through the web browser your best bet would be flash(actionscript) and for downloading games then you you can get a games maker or learn C++, for dos then WIN32 then usong an engine (or thats what i have gathered from the order in which i see tutorials on the net)

Moving to "Computer Programming" forum :).

Where Would i Beable To get that stuff?

If you want to make games or applications that will run on your web page then you will want to use Java or VBscript
("Visual Basic"). Then you can embed it into your html code with the <embed> tag or the <applet> tag.

I hope this helps u!

thanks for the idea i have tryed to download vb but can't do u have any sites that u know where i could get it?

Simple games can by made using Director (by Macromedia) or Flash. You can try that as well. You should know some programming though to get anywhere (that's with all games).

Java too is used, and its simpler than C++ and more web orientated. Go around and find the type of games you want on your site (whether they're puzzles or whatever, and contact the webmasters there where to find information). Worst comes to worst, post an example game you want up, and ask on this forum.

i don't want to make 3d games right now or 2d i just want to make a simple game .

Umm... FYI, if the game is not 3D, its 2D, example tetris, has a x and y axis.

There are no powerful tools as such to make ready made games for free. What you can do is put links from your site to sites that already have games.

Here is a game I greatly improved on. I got the original source code from some website.... I wrote about 95% of the program.

I made it in Visual Basic 6.

Seriously? It runs too fast. Hmmm... I built the thing on P3 533 and I've played it on my 1.4GHz Athon.

I'll look into it though.

Yeah, I remember when I started getting interested in programming. I thought I was going to end up making something like Final Fantasy all by myself in my spare time. I got to the beginning of week 3 in Learn C++ in 21 days and realized it took something more than just that book to make games, or even graphical programs. Somehow I finally got it through my head that there is a reason those Playstation games have two hours of credits! It takes teams of people to make a game like that. Unless you're a musician, expert coder, artist, designer, and maybe divine, you don't have much hope of making a game like that by yourself. You need to learn an aspect, learn it well, and then go join a team or start your own.

Somehow after my dreams were shattered I got sucked into web development and databases instead. It's not games, but it's a lot of fun anyway.

Heh, roller coaster tycoon, made by three ppl, a programmer, an artist and a musician.

And that is such a fun game too! :)

Ok. I have been taking some whacks at game programming myself. First off, it isn't going to happen over night. You are going to go through hours of sometimes ridiculously minute errors in your code, only to plug away at it for horus more. I reccomend you start in Flash 5, and go to flashkit.com and get yourself a good game programming tut. Once you have that MASTERED, try working on a game in visual basic, It is quite a jump, so I reccomend RPGToolkit to start with. Evetnually all the programming languages you are learning will come together and you'll be able to use each of them to do different things. It's a long hard road, but i'm sure it's worth it.

...theres no easy way to create a "simplė game" ; first your going to have to read a lot of books

Probably the quickest, easiest, and most satisfactory way to be introduced to game programming is simply editing. You get introduced to the way the game stores data, the different variables associated with the game, etc. And don't underestimate editing - it can be quite tiresome and complex, depending on the game and the editor you're using (and what you're editing).

It's true that you have to really know what you're doing to actually write the backbone for a game, even a simple one. But changing a game and creating a game are two different mo's.

After that, I agree that the next step would be flash scripting.

if you want people to play it embeded on your site you should learn java.

Definitely. or once, again flash, javascripts not too shabby either
