Discussion: vBindex for vBulletin 3.5

If you wish to discuss this (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=83476) announcement, please do so in this thread :)

I too use this portal. I like it for it's simplicity. I suspect it can be converted for use in less then 30 minutes. If the author or yourslef pick it back up, great though. I'm planning on using it either way.

Yeh converting it shouldn't take long :)

I would just rather wait and see if NTLDR is going to come back and take over, or if he is going to let me take it over :)

vbindex is the best addon for vbulletin. I do hope it is continued.

Please make a update - I won't update to 3.5 without Vbindex ;)

Any word?

Where can I find this addon?

Chris can you port it over?

I really dont think NTLDR is coming back, its been a long time since this thread was started, and we are all very anxious to get vbindex going on our sites, as vbulletin 3.5.0 is nearing GOLD status..

How is it going? RC3 has been released and stable is coming closer every day. We are alot of people that need vBindex.

vBindex 3.5 is in production by NTLDR - I can't reveal alot more other than it will be alot better than 3.0 ;)

Shouldn't be long for a release, probably mid-October is a fair estimate :)

Sounds great! I hade evil thought about uninstalling vBindex and installing vbadvanced since i paniced and need a frontend.

ping.

I won't upgrade vbulletin without this, so I'm anxiously awaiting release. Thread subscribed.

Even the occasional update with "getting closer now" or "grease the skids, she's coming in" or something to keep me (us) teased would be cool.

Further, I'd happily help beta test. Let me know if such assistance is required/desired.

Dont take me wrong now, and i dont want to make any bad PR for vBindex. I have been running vBindex for 2 years now i think since vB 2 probably and i like it very much!

When 3.5 was released i was in big need for a 3.5 release and since there was no vBindex out i took a decission to change to vBadvanced.

Here is what i did and how it went:

First backup everything "as is", both DB and HTML-directory so if anything goes wrong you can revert in less then 5min. Save your styles and lang as XML just in case. Then i saved all modified styles i used in vBindex as txt-files just in case. Take a printscreen of how your vBindex looks at the moment.

Uninstalled vB (uninstaller isnt perfect by the way, there is a % missing in a "SELECT ... LIKE LCASE('vbindex%')" that wont remove styles if not % is in place, but after that it went smooth.

Uppgraded to vBulletin 3.5, then installed vBadvanced CMPS 2.0.0.
fixed all styles, etc, took in total 7h from start to finish to get it like i wanted it.

Must say that vBadvanced is far more advanced then vBindex when it comes to handling "boxes", all boxes can be left, right, center, adding boxes is even smoother then vBindex, but the thing i loved most was that it replaces "forum"-links automaticly in header, footer, and navbar to point right when you are at the front page so you dont need to have a header/footer/navbar for both forum and vBindex and dont have to edit javascripts, pm_popup, etc to work from both portal and forum.
The less styles i have to "merge/update" manually at a forum-upgrade the better for me, so i must say that this is a big plus.

Well thats my thought.

I have been playing with vBaCMPS and vB_Drupal. NTLDR is just too long gone for my sites to rely on.

We have taken vBadvanced's attention to those little details to heart during our 3.5 planning stage and I can assure you that the annoying interface for column control has been replaced with a more advanced and somewhat rival system to that of vBa's, and headers/footers/navbars and other duplicate templates have been removed (or so I can see from the template structure) to use vB's default templates :)

Chris

I cant waith

Subscribing to this thread since vbadvanced for some unknown reason wont work for me.

Waiting for this one as well

lack of compatibility with vb 3.5 has more or less knackered my website! Please release soon!

Hi,

How is getting along with the release? Just trying to plan the update...

LeMarsu

OK we're End of October now? I take it its slipped? When can it be expected?

subscribed as well and cant wait to see the finished product. please release soon

All good things for those who wait, lets just hope we dont have to wait for to long :)

Anyone have simple workarounds to get basic functionality until new version is out?

Do we have any news for the vb3.5.1 vBindex???
Thats the only reason I am still using vB3.0

I think we all should start looking for something else. I have also been waiting for a new vBindex before upgrading but we have to develop something on our own now.

It's not easy, but the old vBindex can be ported to the new vBulletin by replacing most of the variables with the new language documented in the new release. I had posted my changes not too long ago, but realized that I hadn't updated every single detail (we don't employ every aspect of vBindex), so it wasn't exactly ready for public use. If anyone is interested, I can probably steer you in the right direction. Whatever we were using in the old version is now fully functional with vBulletin 3.5.1.

Still nothing done on it, damn, im running VBA for now, but i don't like it no where near as much as vbindex.

Anything on this yet?

It seems there will never be a 3.5 version of vbindex.

Mostly, I read through threads like the following:
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=98047
to see how the calls to variables have changed and replaced the formatting accordingly in the vBindex files.

This thread was useful for fixing the BBCode parsing:
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=82693

I believe I also got a lot of help from here:
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=98009

I think I also compared new templates with old ones, and made any changes to the vBindex templates that seemed necessary, but I can't remember just now if this was needed.

I'll have to dig up my work for specific details if it is still of interest.

Babble, can u attach your modified version?

I have it on good authority that that the new version is in flight, and that we just need to be patient. The developer is experiencing some technical challenges right now, but is working hard to provide us with the quality we're used to seeing and then some.

I, for one, am willing to wait for what I'm confident will meet my needs moving forward. There is nothing "so broken" with my current 3.0 implementation driving me to move to 3.5 right away.

Cheers,
ZJ

Thanks for the update, Zhin Jio.

gosh im still waiting... i want to upgrade to 3.5 ASAP!

still waiting waiting waiting... i want fianly to upgrade to 3.5

long wait

Good thing people weren't holding their breath... I was actually looking forward to seeing where this was heading. Guess I'll stick with CMPS.

Would have loved to give this a go. Started reading posts from June of last year making promises, hoping the thread would lead me to a link to download... only to see it's still unreleased.

Bummer.

Hi Chris. Could we have some sort of a time estimate? I was thinking about changing to something else so I could upgrade but I really hate to lose VBIndex. I have been so happy with this product. It's going on a year since the initial post so I was about to click off before seeing yours. I look forward to hearing from you.

I have to get in touch with NTLDR again to see the progress of this but hopefully it will not be long :)

Thank you for responding! I will hold off til I hear from you. *smiles*

Update on this for 3.5.4?

Works for 3.5.4, too.

The variable changes were introduced by 3.5.0 and haven't changed since then.
