...it took only 60 years from the first powered flight to land on the moon, but in the last 30 absolutely nothing has been done. That is extremely annoying...

Because only economic & political interests govern the world. If you think on it, even the moon race was an "stupid" competition between two countries, more interested in demostrate his technological superiority than in acquire real knowledgement.
And I'm not saying that space exploration it's abandoned, only seems that a "big step" doesn't produces a "big movement"

The space shuttle is a pretty amazing feet, moreso Concorde taking passangers well over the sound barrier. The Blackbird SR71 was built back in 1967 and was classified for a long time, for all we know there are similarly amazing craft in service today.
Eh, no...the tech that produced the STS and Concorde was gleamed from the race to the moon, and the race to break the sound barrier...since those times, more than 30 years ago, the advancement of tech in those areas has been rather stagnant (and I mean stagnant as in actually used, not proposed or theorized or concepted...actual application of new technologies--again, in these areas--has been stagnant).

What do you expect? 30 odd years after reaching the moon you expect to be living on it?! I'm suprised there aren't more supersonic passenger planes nor more *interesting* spacecraft, but even if there was they'd be made using todays tried and tested technology. There's a point where research slows to a snails pace on particular technology; with rocket and turbine technology we're pretty much at that point. NASA seem to be finding out that alternative methods of propulsion aren't working near as well as rocket and turbine power.
To put it in a exaggerated example, I suppose that what Feyd means is something similar to invent the steam machine and then spend 30 years making the wheels rounder. ;)
I remember reading back a year or so ago in Popular Science that someone was developing a plane that could exceed Mach 5. That'd be cool. :)
Yeah, the ramjet up to Mach 5, and the scramjet from Mach 5 to Mach 25.
But what use is there for such an aircraft? Who would be in that big of a hurry?
It is necessity which is the mother of invention -- and the grandmother of business.
There is no necessity for a plane that goes Mach 5. What he was talking about was an escape plane from a new space shuttle or something. The reason it goes so fast is that it starts off at an incredible altitude.
Mind you, this idea was developed about a year before Columbia, so its nothing extremely new.
