When is enough enough

Hello fellow developers

I need some advice when is enough enough when dealing with a client that is constantly annoying me or another employee with samples and various procrastination techniques. What do you guys do when you have a client like this that just wont comit and how do you get him to sign with you?

Thanks

I say if the client is getting to you then move on. Its not worth your time on them seeing as how they probably won't change. Make them realize how they've annoyed you by having them have to find someone else to do work for them.

It's tempting to get rid of such customers but my experience shows it sometimes requires just a little more effort to build trust and win these customers. Once such tough customers gain your trust they will be your most loyal clients.

It depends on how much the job is worth. If it's a small job that's only going to take you 8 hours then don't spend 5 hours of your time trying to get the job! You have to limit the amount of free consultation time you can give someone. After that they have to pay for consulting.

Thanks guys.

Come on everyone put in your two cents, this is important stuff to new developers and old.

What I find is if you contact them every week asking if they have made a decision yet, because they will either say yes to stop you from phoning, or they will say no and than you know they weren't that interested in the first place and they have just made you waste your time. Either way you will finally get your answer, but if they are for a small job, just phone every now and than.

As already stated above, you can only give so much "free consulting". What you should basically do is, if it is a large scale job that the pay might be substantial then you should give them say 1 or 2 hours to sit down with them, talk to them, and do a consult. During the consult you might consider setting up a deadline for them to decide, which after that date - they will need to pay for another consult. After that, call them to remind them once a week for 1-2 months, or until the deadline comes.

If after the deadline passes, you still dont have an answer then simply move on, don't keep calling/contacting them or you will seem desperate and they will get the impression that they can just string you along.

Hope it helps!
