:mad: My windows (98) crashes at least 3 - 4 times a day and often closes programs when I just start to get some work done in them.
Has anyone got any clues as to why my computer just crashes. There is no apparant reason for this, it just comes up with illegal operation errors and shuts down my progs.
(is there really a hidden windows control panel to change this;)?)

Maybe do some basic housekeeping - delele all .tmp files, empty the trash can, de-frag your hard drive.
How long has it been since you reformatted and re-installed Windows? If it's been over 2 years thats the problem.

I empty trash almost every time I shut down, and my temps are deleted every time I shut down. I've run norton anti-virus a few timse and clean sweep.
I think I'll have to get a new OS but my crummy little p2 200mhz processor can't handle any of the newer ones and I can't afford to upgrade. Anything because it is so old and I've already maxed my mother board to the limit I need a new mother board which means new everything almost.:(
I'm getting a job soon to raise money for registering my biz I guess I'll get a new comp first. I just thought their might be a known fix or file error.

I've got a Pentium 150 Mhz and my computer runs fine. I only use 300 MB of my 500 MB hard drive. I do a lot of advanced features, so I had to upgrade to 64 MB of RAM. Started with 16.
It could be memory shortage, low free space, corrupted files, etc. I always re-format every 4 months. I don't lose much except my desktop settings. I also have to re-install IE 6, Mozilla and my other programs. I can do the whole thing in an 8 hour work period.

I also started with Windows 3.1 and I upgraded to 98SE last year. It also might be looking for something that's missing in the system registry. I have a nice utility for this called System Mechanic. Their site is at http://www.iolo.com/sm . It also gets rid of junk files (there is a lot of extensions that they search for!), it scans for invalid shortcuts, clears internet traces, and allows you to see what loads on startup. I only have Task Scheduler running. I use it to defrag my hard drive after 10 min. being idle. It's a nice setup. With the above methods, my CPU feels like a 500MHz machine! :thumbsup:

I've heard that the XP Start Menu is green. How does that look? I just can't imagine having a Start Menu being green. I'm used to it being grey. Maybe they wanted to add color. These green scrollbars on this site are annoying. I don't like green too much. Blue is my favorite. Can you still customize the Start Menu color or is it fixed? Thanks for the info! :thumbsup:

The Start 'Button' is green, not he menu. Also, you can change the appearance of the menu to 'classic' (displays menu in a format seen in earlier versions of Windows). You get used to it after a while. I believe you can change the color of the start button, but can't remember if this is the case off the top of my head ;).

That's cool that you can go back to classic. To get back on talking about crashes, I've tried software that intercepts crashes but I don't like how they work. It's too complicated for me. I need something simple. Hope that helped get back on topic. :D
Yeah you definitely should consider getting a new system. They aren't all that expensive these days. Brand new high end Dells and Gateways are going for as little as $500-$600 USD. I've had my new Gateway for 6 months now running XP and it has yet to crash or give me any trouble whatsoever. I'm quite happy with it.
And by the way you can customize XP. Here is a shot of my desktop right now along with my start menu :)

It looks nice, but I'm just so used to the classic menu. I suppose I'll probably get used to it, but I don't think I want to readjust. If I get a new computer, I'll probably format the drive and install my 98SE OS. I'm used to 98 right now. I'm not a very good adapter to new things. I need consistency. That's just me. :D

I've set WinXP to behave exactly like Win98.
Anyway, what your problem is is really quite simple. It's called Windows.
I dual-boot SuSE 8.0 Linux, and much prefer to be working in KDE3 than WinXP.
WinXP is pretty stable - before dual-booting Linux, I've had WinXP run steady over a week without restarting, doing typical desktop stuff. I still get memory-dumped relatively often enough though to make me hate it.
Go download a copy of Mandrake or something and give it a go :).
This might not fit topic, but how do I go about dual booting. Or does it automatically detect the other OS and let you choose? Just wondering. What is the download address?

Windows wipes out the MBR whenever you install it, so you want windows installed first.
Every major Linux distro comes with LILO, a boot manager that installs itself on the MBR and allows booting to different OS's, such as Linux, OpenBSD, and Windows (one possible triple-boot scenario).
The Mandrake installer does everything for you, so you don't need to mess around with the LILO config files (which isn't fun ;)).

Oh my, win XP looks really customizable from the look of your desktop spookster. I'd only seen the default width gradient silver taskbar and green start button and I thought that was cool.
Anywho, I'm going to continue with my current plan of getting a job and buying my own system (I currently use my dad's). It may take me a while but I guess that's life.:)
