Tomcat Initial Setup

I just ran through the basic Tomcat install on my account and can see the "hello world" demo page. I cannot, however, determine what the Tomcat application manager url is, and Westhost responded to my inquiry on the subject saying "we do not offer anymore support or offering the tomcat package with our VPS accounts".

It has been several years since I worked with Tomcat, so I would appreciate any assistance -- including a URL someone could point me to that would help.

Thanks -

dh

I have not used Tomcat but what you might do is log in via FTP and have a look at the test page that you see the "hello world" on. Not sure how Tomcat works but often the test pages well reveal where things are via paths that are used in them. :) I do know that by default often such test pages are in /var/www/html/plugins

Also have you reviewed the documentation on the the Jakarta Project (http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-4.0-doc/) page?

P.S. I went back to search through some old post here on the forum on the topic and it may be that you well find what you need in var/tomcat4. A search on Tomcat would return the post I found and there are some other issues that folks ran into that may help you if you have a look at them.

The Jakarta Project page only gives generic information. What I need to know is where WH puts it during its install. I tried a number of things suggested on the Jakarta/Apache/Tomcat site and none worked or made sense.

No, there's nothing in /var/www/html/plugins, and yes, I did check the forum thoroughly before posting here.

DH,
I went ahead and installed Tomcat on my test account and it looks like the WH install is at /var/tomcat4 as mentioned in other threads. From a browser the test pages are accessed via yourdomain.com/hw but if you log in via FTP you do not see such a dirctory in /var/www/html. This led me to look at my httpd.conf file and while doing that I noticed the mod_jk.conf. Config files are located at /etc/httpd/conf. The "hw" seems to be set there. I see other entries that have been commented out in that file but not sure if they might be of use to you or not. There was also some stuff installed into /ect/tomcat4. There is the tomcat4.conf file in that directory and in it CATALINA_HOME is set to /var/tomcat4. I wish I could be more help to you on this but hopefully some of the above information well get you where you need to be. :)

This is great -- I have the hw app as well -- and something was pointing it somewhere other than my root web directory. It was driving me nuts trying to figure out where it was coming from. Thanks!!

I have been playing with this a bit more and it looks like the "default" admin and manager that comes with the install is not active. The files are owned by root so you can't do much with them. Not sure why WH does that but I would think if they are not going to allow the use of them that they would be removed from the server instead of just takeing up space. :) I am able to download the files to my local machine and then upload them back to /var/tomcat4/webapps/hw which then allows me to change permissions and such so perhaps that well be a workaround for you if it is needed.
