Prevent somebody from downloading MP3

I have some clips of a lecture on a website that are in MP3 format. When somebody clicks on the link, it asks them to "open" or "save" the file. Is there a way to make it automatically play instead of giving them the option to save it?

That depends on the client-side browser setup, so not really.

Although there may be a more complex way of setting the type to "application\type", but I don't think that would help either.

Sorry

Yeah I know there is a way to run it and host it kind of like what you would do with an online radio station. I am not sure exactly how to do that but that would be your best bet. The only problem is that you might have a problem if people have their files automatically save when opened in Musicmatch or RealPlayer.

Thanks. I guess I will continue exploring my options. I was just hoping there was a way to stop the "save" option from popping up. On my PC I have Internet Explorer set to automatically play mp3's when I click on them instead of saving them. Do you know where in Internet Explorer I can go to reverse that setting?

I mean that when I click on a link, it automatically starts playing the file instead of giving me the option to "open" or "save". I would like to know how to get that option back.

if you just want it to play try embedding it into a macromedia movie.

That's not really the best way to do it.

What if the user doesn't have flash/shockwave installed? What if they're running an incompatible browser?

The best solution would be to correctly configure the server.
