'crapware'

crapware is the unofficial definition for useless trial software that comes with so many brand new pcs now, I recently bought a new pc (3ghz dual core, 1gig ram, 7600gt, 320gig hd...) for around £440, it hasn't come yet so I still have to deal with the piece of junk im using now (1.5ghz, 512mb ram, radeon 9000, 40gig hd, spyware, system faults...) and am wondering how much, if any crapware it comes with. Luckily the pc is NOT a dell *shudders*.

What are peoples thoughts/ experiences with crapware?

if any crapware it comes with
*cough*Peer2Peer*cough*downloads.

I always preformat when i get a new computer, and I do custom installs. so i generally have less crapware then alot of people do on a "recommended" install. but there are always a few things that get thru in which the great power off add/remove programs comes in handy :> usually takes me a good 3 / 4 hrs to get it all set up, but I think thats time well spent to get rid of the junk and get all the software I do want. also deactivate your "system restore" as it really doesn't provide any useful utility since most virus's attack those file, thus making it pointless to restore. and edit your startup so that it only loads the necessary files too, because even the OS system initiates files that are for lack of a better word.... retarded, as they are not ran every time you have the computer on

As pissa says, I always do a complete reinstall of everything on a new PC. Avoids any little goodies the OEM might have left for you :p

The biggest problem I find is Windows... there's a horrible tendency to bundle Windows with PCs, to the point where it can be quite hard to find a PC without it. This is a real problem if you already have a copy or (like me) don't want to install Windows on it in the first place, since you're paying for a new copy anyway.

It's never fun to buy a new computer, assuming to start off with a clean slate, to find windows and other crapware* already installed. The only exception is a web browser. you need that to download a better web browser.

* Note that I'm including windows as crapware...

The only exception is a web browser. you need that to download a better web browser.Er, not on systems with a package manager...

But you need something to access the net.
I guess you could be creative and write yourself a program, but that's overkill :p

But you need something to access the net.Yeah... but not a browser :)

So why is it people include windows as crapware? I understand what Twey said about already having one or getting a better version, but I've heard others before say that they really don't like windows. What are the reasons?

I'm amused by the reference to dell. I got a dell laptop last year. Wow, did it come with a ton of junk. I don't even know what half of it is. :p
And of course they don't send the restore discs... just for fun. But I called and complained and got them.

This would hold true in just about any manufacturer, and hell alot of placed besides it, especially big companies. Its alot easier for them to just ship you a small part like that then try to go through all the different resources and change of hands.

1. Bill Gates.
2. He makes his products for his computers and ONLY his computers.
3. Bill Gates.
4. He generally does not care about compatability and advancing the industry
5. Bill Gates.
6. While the computer is inheritently stupid no matter where you go, His programming employee's are right about the same level as the computer.
7. Poor Troubleshooting capabilities

eg. Its because of Bill Gates that so many people "hate the computer" and I bet if you were to poll everyone that has a complaint about a computer 98% of them would be running on some brand of windows and/or other microsoft product.

The most commonly cited are issues of performance, stability, and security. For example, the number of vira on Windows is something like ninety-five times the amount on other operating systems. There are various reasons and myths as to why this is so; I think this article (http://www.theregister.co.uk/security/security_report_windows_vs_linux/) sums up the security issue reasonably well. Stability... you only have to look at the fact that rebooting periodically and even reinstalling the whole OS occasionally is considered normal in the Windows world. Performance is a lot harder to measure, especially given Microsoft's tendency to make things monolithic wherever possible rather than modular.

The ethical implications of Microsoft's business model and aggressive tactics are a reason that many never realise, or, in a lot of cases, care about; there are issues there too, though.

Perhaps this is why, according to Netcraft, 47 of the top 50 web sites with the longest running uptime (times between reboots) run Apache. [2] None of the top 50 web sites runs Windows or Microsoft IIS. So if it is true that malicious hackers attack the most numerous software platforms, that raises the question as to why hackers are so successful at breaking into the most popular desktop software and operating system, infect 300,000 IIS servers, but are unable to do similar damage to the most popular web server and its operating systems?

I think about sums it up

Wow, i feel so common-ignorant and brainwashed . . . I've never bought a computer (or witnessed one being bought) that didn't come with windows os . . . though, quite frankly, i'm starting to get sick of it. The server for my websites is a linux and it's always working whereas my pc is always not working and it never occured to me that my pc could actually work as well as my server, but i don't know if i can make that switch . . . I feel like an old married woman considering divorcing her abusive husband, lol . . .

I've never had any (major) problems with Windows before.

I've never had any (major) problems with Windows before.

I believe you.

But I just had to get my computer out of the shop because it was so flooded with worms and viruses and spyware that I could not use it. The last time I took my computer to the shop was three months ago for the same reason. I ran the same antivirus program three times today and each time it caught about eighty something viruses and spyware instances.

It might not be the os. But then again, it just might.

Use a firewall then.

A firewall is ineffective against most of today's malware, since almost every time it's hidden in something that the user has downloaded, like a web page, an image, a program, an email...

I've never had any (major) problems with Windows before.

That means your smart with your computer.
Complete imbeciles will kill their computer no matter what operating system they run.

It's true, a bad user beats a good OS hands-down. A good user can usually (with difficulty) counteract a bad OS, but it's always a lot more effort, and the end result tends to be inferior to the same user on a good OS.

my windows partition needs a reinstallation of windows every few months or so because i have a problem...
...when you get a regestry of over 128MB windows runs like ****!
so i only use windows for games now...

or you could just use a registry cleaner? to clean all of the junk.

or you could just use a registry cleaner? to clean all of the junk.

i tried that but when i run some of the programs that have many many reg entries they renter them
i tried making it to where i could not wright to that key\folder but then the programs have errors

Here's a new word.

Micro$pam

Speifically all of the random junk MS products (especially windows) pop up.

For example, I just did the "Genuine Advantage" of windows, and it decided to pop up a page.... "Your software is validated. However, purchase Vista! Only $89"..... paraphrased.

However, purchase Vista! Only $89

$89 huh, I always seen it advertised (even just the upgrade from XP to VIsta) for no less than $200.

Micro$pam

Very funny. I will have to use that one of these days when telling my customers the downsides of Windows (especially Vista).

Oh, I dunno.
It was around that for the student discount (maybe just the upgrade from XP) at the store here.
I just tossed a price in there.
As I said, paraphrased, since I closed the window.
But it really did pop up, acknowledging that it's genuine, with a large picture of a vista box, saying I should buy it :p

make sure to clear up the biggest misconceptions about linux...
- ITS NOT COMMAND LINE and/or DOS.
It can be, if you want it too. Same as windows.
- You don't have to be uber-smart.
You can be, if you want too. Same as windows.
EDIT: This is for Thetestingsite.

yeah that's stupid djr, if your product is good enough, you shouldn't have to shove it down your client's throats...

- You don't have to be uber-smart

But you still need to have a intermediate knowledge of computers.

The skill-level requirements are pretty much the same as those for Windows. The difficulty comes with people who're used to Windows, and make the assumption that this, that and the other will work the same way as they do on Windows.

Like me trying to install Ubuntu :).
