New hard drive- now I can breath again!

So I just added a second hard drive to my computer and am using it as the primary drive. Finally I feel like I can breath again! I've been relying on the same old 20 gig hard drive for 5 years now, and things have gotten so bad I've been hovering at around 90% disk full for a couple of years now. I couldn't even defrag because of the lack of space.

Now my primary drive is 80 gig. Everything just runs much more smoothly now, and all it cost was $50! It almost feels like getting a new computer in terms of improvement in speed and freedom to do things like save a large file lol. Second best investment for an aging computer next to RAM. :)

Ha.
I still love my 250GB Hard Disk.

Ha.
I still love my 300GB External Hard Disk :p

Haha.
My Hard Drives:
250GB + 80GB + 20GB + 120GB = 470GB

Haha, I mean oh no -
My Hard Drives -
300GB + 6GB + 55GB = 361GB - You Win :)

Hmm... Still doesn't beat djr33's 1TB (1000GB)

HOLY! Is it a server?

It's an external hard disk.

Never even hard of a Hard Disk going that big...

Wo...

Talking about me?

Internal G5: 160 (native), 250 (added), 160 (external), 1TB (external)...
1,570gb, total.
Plus, now 120gb on the laptop, and going to get an external firewire-powered mobile harddrive... either 160 or 250gb.

...video... yeah... takes space.

Yep,
I so want your 1TB!!!! :D

how much did that T external put you back ?

Eh, a few hundred dollars/pounds...

I've got 1 terabyte (1000 gb)

Wow... I would do anything (well.. not anything, but pretty darn close) to have that :p.

Whats the biggest amount of space anyone has seen on ONE medium (eg a HD 1.5TB for me)...

medium? As in... how much space anyone has in total over all their hard drives?
Or do you mean one storage unit... meaning on hard drive.

I have 1TB in a single device (it's actually two 500 drives nested)... I think that's the most you'll find from anyone here, EXCEPT in the case of servers. Anything above that gets really expensive. It would be more worth it to buy two of those than to buy a 1.5TB disk, etc.

I saw an 8TB once. I doubt many motherboards would support it though.

Haha, in a few years' time someone's going to look back on this and think, "haha, wow, a whole 8TB," before proceeding to download this whole site onto their >100TB hard drive. :p

There was an interesting new hard drive technology in the works a little while back involving magnetic flux quanta (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/04/070427101316.htm). That would dramatically decrease the physical size of hard drives, and probably push the price of manufacturing high-capacity drives down considerably.

Theye exist, surely, but I doubt anyone on the boards here has need for such a huge harddrive.
At that point, an external RAID, etc. makes the most sense.

I agree, but some of the latest games are over 10gb minimal install, and just a few years ago they were 1/2gb. So if your a serious gamer, you may need a huge hard drive

In which case, as djr33 said, you'd use RAID, which is faster, cheaper and more flexible.

Maybe for games, but it seems people would just buy the PS3 and do that, for new stuff, rather than gaming on a PC.
That's a lot of space for a single game.
Then again... sure, get more space.

the only reason that seems logical to me (and is in fact why I have space) is video editing. Pictures, audio, and other data adds up to video, and takes a huge amount of space. But either of those (or other bits) can't ever take up a comperable space to video, so it's either that or nothing. Or, it seems, gaming.

Certainly for web design, a 100gb hard drive would be absoultely enough.

RAID is faster? I thought it's just a mirror of a hard disk.

From what I know, it does multiple threading, so you have mirrors of data in the array and it can access each, giving you like 3x the access time, drawing from all 3 drives/ports... etc.

Thanks. Man, I should get another hard disk then.
Hmm... This (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Brand-New-Seagate-7200rpm-SATA-250GB-hard-drive_W0QQitemZ230123531317QQihZ013QQcategoryZ130870QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) looks nice.

RAID is a special system... complex. I really don't know any more about it than what I said/guessed above, but I do know that just a second drive wouldn't allow you to do that, unless it was raid enabled. I believe that the 1TB is RAID enabled, though.

im not gonna start a new thread for this question but:
is there a named word after zotzabyte i just learned that word today because i got curios if there was anything after yottabyte??
