So I just added a second hard drive to my computer and am using it as the primary drive. Finally I feel like I can breath again! I've been relying on the same old 20 gig hard drive for 5 years now, and things have gotten so bad I've been hovering at around 90% disk full for a couple of years now. I couldn't even defrag because of the lack of space.
Now my primary drive is 80 gig. Everything just runs much more smoothly now, and all it cost was $50! It almost feels like getting a new computer in terms of improvement in speed and freedom to do things like save a large file lol. Second best investment for an aging computer next to RAM. :)

Plus, now 120gb on the laptop, and going to get an external firewire-powered mobile harddrive... either 160 or 250gb.

Whats the biggest amount of space anyone has seen on ONE medium (eg a HD 1.5TB for me)...

I have 1TB in a single device (it's actually two 500 drives nested)... I think that's the most you'll find from anyone here, EXCEPT in the case of servers. Anything above that gets really expensive. It would be more worth it to buy two of those than to buy a 1.5TB disk, etc.
I saw an 8TB once. I doubt many motherboards would support it though.
Haha, in a few years' time someone's going to look back on this and think, "haha, wow, a whole 8TB," before proceeding to download this whole site onto their >100TB hard drive. :p
There was an interesting new hard drive technology in the works a little while back involving magnetic flux quanta (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/04/070427101316.htm). That would dramatically decrease the physical size of hard drives, and probably push the price of manufacturing high-capacity drives down considerably.

I agree, but some of the latest games are over 10gb minimal install, and just a few years ago they were 1/2gb. So if your a serious gamer, you may need a huge hard drive

Maybe for games, but it seems people would just buy the PS3 and do that, for new stuff, rather than gaming on a PC.

the only reason that seems logical to me (and is in fact why I have space) is video editing. Pictures, audio, and other data adds up to video, and takes a huge amount of space. But either of those (or other bits) can't ever take up a comperable space to video, so it's either that or nothing. Or, it seems, gaming.

RAID is faster? I thought it's just a mirror of a hard disk.
From what I know, it does multiple threading, so you have mirrors of data in the array and it can access each, giving you like 3x the access time, drawing from all 3 drives/ports... etc.

RAID is a special system... complex. I really don't know any more about it than what I said/guessed above, but I do know that just a second drive wouldn't allow you to do that, unless it was raid enabled. I believe that the 1TB is RAID enabled, though.
