Word attachments - PHP - MySQL

Hi,

I need advise. I am working on a messaging system using PHP3 and MySQL. People sign-up and log in and are shown messages sent to them. They are also supposed to receive MS Word attachments. What will be best - if the sender (who also logs onto the system) sends the attachment via the site and PHP saves it in a directory somewhere - and the database will contain a HTTP link to where it is - or "uploading" the entire file into the database. I think the second option is out as it might slow the database down. If this is a silly question please excuse but I am learning still and this message board has already helped me.

Also - which commands can I use to either save the attachment into MySQL or into a directory?

Regards
Tony

I too would like to learn about whether one can insert files into a MySQL database. I need to do this with PDF files.

If anyone has any information, I would be grateful for your sharing.
