Mailto: in Netscape

Is there any way of modifying the default mailing program associated with Netscape Communicator, which should get fired on clicking a "mailto:" link?
By default, it opens up Netscape Messenger.

TIA!

If your on a Win95 box, then it will open what ever is set in the registry.

Take a look at the registry key - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesmailtoshellopencommand

One of the true faults in Netscape, and one they don't seem to care about. Unusual for Netscape, particularly in their pre-AOL times. I guess they took a leaf out of Microflot's book and decided to keep a few customers of their own.

Anyway, the registry advice is true, but if you're not familiar with editing the registry, don't go at it. One boo-boo in there and you'll screw up your whole rig.

If Outlook is your email client of choice (sorry, but it's a good app), there's a solution out there already, which took me an age to find. Check out www.macgyver.org/software/nsoutlook.html (http://www.macgyver.org/software/nsoutlook.html) for a fix. You just have to place a .dll (Dynamic Link Library) file in your communicator directory, do a wee bit of editing to a text file and you're done. At least if you make a boo-boo in the Netscape preferences file, all you'll do is lose a little work on your browser...

All the instructions are included in the zip file you'll find on that site.

Good luck!
