Commercial Antivirus vs. Free Antivirus.

What is the major differences in between commercial antivirus and free antivirus.

Basically they are doing the same job right? If that's the case, why should we spend a bomb on antivirus software like SOHPOS, Trend Micro on our mail server?

Some mail server like Merak do come with its own antivirus, compare to these comercial antivirus software, what's the differences?

The virus definitions for the free anti-virus programs are kept up to date by the community, and via projects such as the OpenAntiVirus (http://www.openantivirus.org/) project.

I haven't really done an objective comparison - I've used Clam AntiVirus (http://clamav.elektrapro.com/) (free) on a few servers when required, and it found the files that had reportedly been infected.

My advice would be to try a free antivirus program, and scan all the mail on your workstation as well. If significant numbers of viruses get past the free scanner, then consider upgrading to a commercial one which may have better virus definitions.

You usually have to pay to get the other features like parental protection and system optimization.

The basic antivirus is the same.
