can not uninstall Symantec Antivirus

When I try to uninstall Symantec Antivirus from this computer,
it prompts me for the uninstall password. The problem is that its
SAV parent server is now permanently offline, and it looks like it
can not verify the uninstall password. How can I uninstall SAV when the uninstallation is password protected, and the parent server is no longer available..?

Try re-installing it without the password and then uninstalling it.

Just a theory...

I don't know about the server NAV version, there are detailed instructions for manually removing a single-user NAV found in the Symantec knowledge base.

Is it a corporate edition? What version?

I just read your first post. Here's the manual for 8.1

Good luck
Tom

Thank you so much people. I will try that manual uninstallation..

Norton's is usually a very hard program to uninstall...there are two basic ways of doing it. there is the barbaric deleting all files under the symantec folder in the program files or you can boot into safe mode and uninstall it that way. I did a stint as a Dell Tech support for a bit *pauses for the laughter to die down* but that was the only two ways I have found to uninstall symantec products of most kinds and versions......

I had the same problem. The password is symantec

Hope it works with you as it worked for me.

try everything and you will find the solution to your problem!

this is the link for the norton removal tool its supposed to be used for failed installations and crap like that but if you remove the folder for norton then run this tool it should work fine

also if it still pops up on start up go to your start menu then press run type in msconfig then go to services check the hide windows services and look for something called symantec or norton or some other crap like then uncheck it then go to start up and look for norton or symantec again and uncheck it then press ok

(little tip you dont need most of the start up programs so if you want to boost your performance a little you might want to disable a few more, it just makes windows boot faster when you start it up)

I think you are referring to the Norton Removal Tool (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039). You will have tried to post the URL when you had less than 5 posts which is why the message appeared.

I'm having the same problem at my company. I can't uninstall because the previous sys admin sucked with documentation. I will try this password. If it works...KUDOS to you!! :tntworth:

The password didn't work so I had to manually uninstall it by making a billion changes to the registry. It sucked but it worked and I was able to get it off the system.

Symantec SUCKS!! :chomp:

Why didn't you try the Norton Removal Tool ? Would have been a hell of a lot easier.

it doesnt work. I tried it, asks you to remove it in Add/Remove progs first. (Which we cant do without the password!)

Why can such a popular program be so crappy?

foun great walkthrough to bypass the password:

I went to Control Panel and ran Add or Remove Programs. Found Symantec Antivirus Client and I clicked on the Remove button. The progress bar ran for a while and a dialog box pop out asking for password to continue the uninstallation.
Uninstall Symantec Corporate Antivirus password
I asked my friend and he didn't know anything about it! I couldn't install any other type of antivirus IF i do not remove the Symantec Antivirus client first. Searched around and found the default password to uninstall Symantec Antivirus client and also a way to bypass the password.

The default password that should work for most of the Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition client uninstallation is "symantec". Easy isn't it? Well it isn't if you don't know.

This is what you should do if the default password didn't work.
1) Go to Start -> Run and type regedit

2) Navigate to:

3) Double click on the value name "UseVPUninstallPassword" and change the value from 1 to 0

4) Close the registry and retry the uninstall.

worked perfectly for me, hopefully will for everyone else too.

In the Symantec System Center console, right-click a server, a server group, or a client group, and then click All Tasks > Symantec AntiVirus > Client Administrator Only Options.

On the Security tab, uncheck Ask for password to allow uninstall of Symantec AntiVirus Client.

tHANK YOU . iT WORKED FINE FOR ME.. :tntworth: :tntworth:
