Is it woth paying to submit to Engines?

Hi folks,

I have a few search engine questions, but there have been no posts in the Search Engine forum since April, so I'll try here.

I submitted a few sites to Yahoo several months ago and we are not yet listed. Yahoo did warn that there is no guarantee of getting listed without paying, and that seems to be the case.

I was wondering does paid submission to Yahoo result in a huge number of referrals?
ie. Are we mad that we haven't yet done it??
(Most of our referrals come from Google at present)

A lot of the engines seem to be going that way now like Excite and Looksmart and the rest, so to cover them all for half a dozen sites would be a bit of an outlay, so we're wondering is it worth it?

I have been submitting manually which is a bit mind-numbing - are any of the automatic submitters of any use at all or is manual the way to go? Would automatically submitting to the hundreds of smaller and exotic engines and manually to the biggest 20 or so bring returns?

Any advice or suggestions very welcome.

I personally don't bother with search engines at all. Most people nowadays only use search engines for specific things that they do not know about otherwise they use recommendations from friends or take notice of advertisements in press etc..

I personally will not pay any search engine to get myself listed amongst all the crap that the search engine companies cannot be bothered to filter out.

My 2 tuppence worth :-)

A good place to submit from is www.jimtools.com
You might also find it worth while to pay for a premium listing at www.goto.com, If you check out their site you will find they produce the results for many sites.
Another important engine to get on is www.google.com (free), as they supply other sites. Goole takes about 2 weeks to list your site but beware of overloading your meta tags.
I wouldn't worry about the other pay to list engines unless you have the money to burn.

Hi chakotha,

Whether or not seach engines are important all depends on what your site does. Does it sell stuff, and if so, what? If you make enough money right now off your site, you may want to look into a company that specializes in Search Engine Optimization. That way they do all the "mind-numbing" tasks for you. Plus the good ones know all the little tricks to get you higher rankings, giving you an added boost.

SilkySmooth: Where did you gather your information about search engine usage? According to all reports I've read, *most people* (75-85%) use search engines to find their information on the Internet. Also, looking at the trends for my own site, I can see that people actually SEARCH for exact domain names! (IE: They are looking for hotmail.com, so they go to Google and search for "www.hotmail.com".) What does that tell you about people's search habits?

So chakotha, if you let us know a little more about your company, we can help point you in the right direction :)

i have paid for several search engine submissions and got dramatic increases in sales. paid submissions seem to rank above non-paid submissions.

My first recommendation is to get listed in www.dmoz.org
then I pay for listings in looksmart as they are the main influence on MSN

However payment by itself doesn't work, you need to optimise your pages for specific keywords, i use this program
