Im probably in the wrong place for this post it's not that technical but here goes

My logging system states that 28% of my hits come from IP addresses only it doesn't resolve a domain name

Why is this?

Is that figure correct, do more people visit using IP only

Id like to know what's going on here

>> it doesn't resolve a domain name

1) Because it's not required.
2) IP is routable, not host.
3) Not everyone has control to their reverse DNS (PTR) because their ISPs don't delegate that.
4) Some ISPs for whatever reasons don't always set a PTR record for their IPs. You can say they have a broken PTR.

When you have a broken PTR, you can't run DNS (authoritative) server and shouldn't run SMTP on that IP.

>> do more people visit using IP only

Read (2). As long as that IP is routable and can reach its destination.

What you say makes sense but is a little difficult to build a picture

This is how my log reads

A visitor from 65.202.1.25 (65.202.1.25)
A visitor from c1215832-a.clmbus1.ga.home.com (24.181.60.186)

The first visitor only has IP but the second resolves an IP and a domain name is this because the ISP hasn't set up PTR to let other servers view a readable format off the remote DNS
