netbsd & pppoe

Does netbsd 1.5 cd from bsdcentral have a pppoe & adsl package in the standard distro, cause I need that before I can connect to the internet. I want to replace my Mandrake SNF with a netbsd distribution with ipf and natd.

Why get pppoe if you are really interested in playing this stuffs?
When ordering high speed Internet access, you should be following this in order:

1) Static IP
2) How many
3) How fast
4) How much

eeehmm, but is it on the cd or do I have to download it first before I reinstall my gateway ???

My isp doesn't give away static ip numbers, it's just a cable connection (COM21) and it works with pppoe.

It depends on how many boxes you have. You can always download it later and fit it in a floppy disk then mount it and build it.

IMHO, whoever choosing PPPoE is not qualify to use BSDs, because of the stupid decision.

Some people don't have a choice. In many places, if you can get broadband at all, it's from one provider. If they only allow PPPoE then that's what you're stuck with.

There's no need to insult someone because their stuck with a bad situation.

Thanx Rod K. And if it's not on the cd I cannot download it because then I can't connect to the internet because I need pppoe to connect....is it so hard to answer a simple question....is pppoe on the netbsd 1.5 cd ???

It's no my fault I need to have pppoe to connect to my cable provider, blame them and don't start flaming me for asking a question, that's what this board is for or not !!!! Not everyone is an expert on everything.....

Some people do and choosing PPPoE is plain dumb. Note, I said choose, that means you have a choice or alternative to choose from. I know, of course, when you don't have a choice, this toy is just not for you.

It's not on the CD. NetBSD has no native support for PPPoE. (FreeBSD does). That's why I said you can download it from your M$ box and save it in floppy, then msdos mount it and build it on NetBSD.

How about DHCP? Does NetBSD has it? I am using DHCP in FreeBSD, so is it any good? I think, DHCP works very well to pick up the IP, Gateway and others by automatic.

Yes, NetBSD supports it.

DHCP sucks but a bit better than PPPoE.

But then you don't have a persistent static IP to run *NIX or servers. DHCP also puts a cap on your growing knowledge. What you can learn and experience are limited.

No problem and but it will take a long reply (perhaps several hundred lines) and I definitely don't have that spare time to give you a free lesson here.

That's right, I don't have the static IP and I live in small town. My ISP service doesn't provide the static IP. It's better than nothing thought.

Hey. I think you need this little program to solve your problem. It is called Roaring Penguin's PPPoE and you can get it here: http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/ . There is a small how-to guide for NetBSD, and it is very simple to setup :) , but why not use FreeBSD, it has support for PPPoE

Thanx, that's all I needed to know. So maybe it's a better idea to use freebsd, well I just try and see what happens when I have the time to do so, thanx.
