quicktime question

sorry top post this in the flash forum but I thought I'd have better luck...

I am sending a dorky video clip to my Mom. I made it using my digital camera. I created a very simple page here:
http://www.canismajor.net/movie.html
and when I view it locally on my computer, it works fine, but if I view it at http://www.canismajor.net/movie.html it doesn't play - just gives the broken quicktime icon. I have quicktime (obviously, since it plays fine locally) but something happened once I ftp'd it to my web site. What's wrong?

Did you upload it in binary?

sorry, what does that mean? All I did was use WS-FTP to upload the file to my webspace.

ws-ftp has two radio buttons and a checkbox on the main screen below the directory/file listings:

O ASCII O Binary [] Auto

ASCII - is for written text files like html, php, etc.
Binary - is for computer generated files, like the movie in your case, or pictures, etc.

When you upload the movie file make sure the Binary radio button is selected (or the Auto option is checked) to ensure that the .mov file is uploaded in the correct format. A binary file uploaded in ASCII format will not work.

I probably haven't explained it very well but I hope that helps.

I understand exactly what you mean, but I just checked and it looks like, by default, Binary is selected so that's how it was uploaded. Thanks for your help tho!

The mystery continues...

dont know if it helps, but you missed the </embed> tag....

Oh yeah! Thanks - but that didn't fix it.

Shouldn't this be like HTML 101? I didn't think putting a quicktime movie on the internet would be so complicated!

when i type the url directly in IE, it doesnt work either. so your html is probably correct and your .mov is somewhat wrong for sure.
btw. this is a really big movie or your provider is really slow. the download took forever with 768kbit!

Ugh! I'm just going to give up. Pisses me off since that's the main reason I bought my digital camera -- to send short video clips to my parents.

The file is about 4MB so it is big, on my T1 connection it takes about 15 seconds... Must be my provider. No surprise there.

I took your code and replaced your movie with one from here:

src="http://acomp.stanford.edu/atss/teaching/quicktime/QT.MOV

and it worked fine... thus, one can only assume it is something to do with the movie. If downloaded it plays fine so for some reason the embedded quicktime player is choking (maybe the compression codec used?), either that or none of us are waiting long enough for the movie to download and play.

I attempted to load the movie url into quicktime and I got a message stating "Couldn't open the file because it is not a file that Quick Time understands" - which is weird because I can download it and play it. I'm wondering if quicktime expects it to be a Fast Start movie.

If you wanted, you could purchaseQuicktime Pro (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/) for $30 and using their Save As, you can save the movie file as a quick start movie which shouldn't give you problems in the future.

I decided to email Nikon (the brand on my digital camera) and ask them to help. Thanks for your information though.

I've discovered that this problem occurs when trying to play a *.mov on a pc because the 'data forks' are not used by the pc. So to this end maybe the embed *.mov should be exported as a 'self-contained' *.mov. I have no idea about exporting and embedding it to web page.

I only tackled imovie (and apples) for the first time a week ago and i am getting the same error message trying to play *.mov files on my pc. I am yet to attampt to re-export it in as a self contained *.mov and see if it works or not. For a 3 minute video that is largely stills and special effects i am not impressed by the 650mb file size or the lack of clarity in the title screens that i added. :D

Greetings,

How excited I was when I found this thread because it "reads" (almost) like the problem I'm having with a mov on our website.

But alas...I am still having problems.

I was given an A&E Special on Pain in America to place on our website for visitors to view.

And just like the other guy who posted here, the movie plays well when viewed in my html editor. But not out there.

My editor also has the default "binary"...so that can't be it either.

So I decided to run my quicktime player and then placing in the url.
The player comes up....with a black screen and the knob below moving (like it was playing)...but no cigar.

Lets see....I don't know what other info to give you.

Here's the url:
http://www.cpmission.com/main/graphics/asap/ASAPonAandE.mov-link.mov

I am not real good with some html/code stuff...so maybe that's it....

I'll check back with you soon? and hope you can help....

Oh! Thanks for being here too!!

What I meant was...my FTP Program lists binary as the default.

Thanks!
