networking 2 computers

Hi. I'm trying to simply connect 2 computers to share files and internet access. I'm wondering if I need more than just the CAT5e network cable because it's not working.

One runs Windows XP and the network card is "Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection" and the other machine runs Windows 2000 and has a "Intel 82558-based Integrated Ethernet with Wake on LAN". Just wondering if I have the correct hardware. Also wondering why both computers say "Network Cable Unplugged" when the cable is plugged into both of them.

Thanks Guys,
Joe

If you are only connecting two computers through each others NICs, then you need a crossover cable instead of the standard ethernet cat5.
