Python 101 (part 1): Snake Eyes

I am glad to see all the press Python is getting as of late. I am making the move into the programing world and Python is not only an excellent place to start, but the reviews make it sound like a language that is not just a stepping stone, but perhaps the next Java...?

hmmm seems intereting want to see how it compares to php programming and according to this guy ( big fan of star wars) it seem reather simple to do but powerful in practice once you know the fundimentals.

STFU!
JAVA IS A PIECE OF CRAP!
java might sound like a good thing, but in practice, no one programmers in java, people rather go thru the hole program and port it instead of programming it in java, cause java=bunch of crap...

Hmmm, last time I checked there were quite a few people developing production-quality Java applications.

Java and Python can live together in a happy coexistence. Check out http://jpublish.sourceforge.net/ for an example.

Lay off the crack man, it is going to your head.

On Page 4 you say if "Perl" is available when you meant Python.

Whole site search:

Java = 191 hits
Python = 20

Please more and more and more :o)...

hehe. php kicks python ***.

pythons are not snakes

Regarding the comment about Java being a "bunch of crap", why has IBM and other companies invested billions of dollars to use Java solutions if this is true? In my experience, most companies make software choices based on what works the most efficiently, cheaply, and quickly. Want to make a guess as to why Java is more frequently used than Python?

If php handles our web scripting needs, why would we use python?

Thanks!

It's nice to see an intro-python article.

I don't really feel that python -programs- should end in .py though, any more than C executables should end in .c or bash scripts should end in .bash . Python modules yes, they oughta end on .py, but not programs. Otherwise, when it comes time to rewrite your code in a new, better language (and yeah, python's probably one of the very best languages out there right now, if not the best for many applications, but it probably won't be anymore 3 decades down the timeline), otherwise then you'll be stuck changing pathnames to no longer include the silly .py extension.

hmm, I don't think so! enterprises decide which software to use by looking at the presentations of consultants. If the consultant only knows Java, he can only talk about Java - nothing about efficiently - else, why would anyone use java on serverside? It's eating resources and developmenttime as much as perl ist eating problems. I think, the reason that java is used that much is, that it is taught at the universitys and is often called something you can't get around without. Well, I can - right now, none of our projects has been using java and we don't plan to do so, and, which is interesting, I never heard about an offer in competition to ours, that was based on java giving the same costs and time!
But, to let harmony return, what are we talking about? Choosing a programming language is like choosing a car, everyone has some good points and some bad points. To be efficiently, to decide which one to use based on the projectneeds, we'd have to know them all, but who does?

This is a great beginning article. Keep up the good work! I'll be back for more.

print is NOT a function!

Jeesh, how much did this guy get paid
to write these articles.
The docs from www.python.org is much
easier to read and has much more
content.
Risks alienating potential converts, methinks.

Pythons are not snakes? Where did you get that piece of information?

This is groundbreaking news for biologists everywhere!

If that were true, Pascal would be *the* language. I tend to believe Java is successful in the US because it looks like that one letter language.
