Intel P4 cpu temp

hello
i have a pentium4 2.8ghz and the average temperature is about 45-56 and i hav not changed any heatsinks or fans just the normal one i got with the cpu, although my dad told me to put some kind of grease onto the cpu to generally keep the temperatures down, i am considering now because i hav read in a couple forums that a P4 should run lower then 50c and my runs well above that some times. ( i recently niticed that only when i enter setup and check cpu health status its shows about 52c but when i start the computer up and everything loads i have a program called easytune4 with my gigabyte motherboard and that shows that my cpu temp is only about 45c, i dont know if it is showing correctly)
thanks :)

You should be running low to mid 30's idle, low to mid 40's under load, unless overclocking. You'd know that if you had looked at the other recent posts on this subject. You most definitely need thermal paste on your cpu to allow good transfer to teh heatsink, unless you ahve a stock intel cooler, which has a thermal pad instead (which isn't very good). I'd recommend more fans and a better heatsink if possible.

yes i might be putting some of that thermal paste onto it because as i said even my dad told me to and yes i do have a stock heatsink and fan because i never thought the temp would be to high with the normal fan you get but when i get some cahs i might go out a buy a bette heatsink that will fit onto my cpu and a better fan but if the paste helps it alot then thats cool, thanks for the help

Be sure to clean the cpu and heat sink thoroughly, since it will have gunk on it from the thermal pad. Don't just slap some thermal paste on in addition to the used pad.
