How do I get rid of this darn white bkgd??

This may be similar to another poster's question...but there was no explanation on how to do it.

I have a logo that has been saved as a .jpg, .tif and .bmp I believe. They want me to get rid of the white background so they can post on the web or print on a colored background. I've tried to copy and paste to a transparent document and tried to just move it to a document with a transparent background but no matter how I save it, it still comes out with that white background (if I bring into Quark you can see the white background but of course I can adjust the picture box to eliminate it), but I'm sure my client works with Word and on the internet (Frontpage - which I'm not at all familar with)...

Can anyone give me any suggestions? Your help is very much appreciated!
Thanks!

Depending on the banner, use the magic wand to select the white and delete it. Or, if the image is pretty intricate, use the magnetic lasso and outline what you want to be visible, invert the selection (Ctrl+Shft+i) and delete the white. Then save as a GIF and mess around with the transparency settings until it looks like what you need. That should be it ... Hope this helps.

If you would like to put the image up on the forum i will try and fix it for you. But the only way to save a transparent image (in Photoshop) is to save it as a .gif and make sure while you're saving it, that the "Transparency" box is checked.

Ok, here is the 4-color version. There is also just a basic blue and white logo, but we'll start with this one. THANKS for your help!!

Hey, to be honest with you, the file you just put up is perfect.

There is a transparent background, unless you are talking about the gradient blue in the middle.

Please let me know if that is what you're talking about. If you are just talking about the part around the image, it's all good.

Here, I don't know if this is what you wanted.
I have a couple questions for you though. The first one is, how come the logo is at 72dpi and not 300dpi (if u intend on using it for print?) Secondly, I suggest trying to obtain the logo from the creator, that way it should already be in pieces and you can create a transparent .gif with a lot more ease and it will look a lot better.

Hi RedDog

Thanks for your help.

I still want the blue gradient, it's the space around the logo I want transparent.

When I open in Photoshop it looks like the space around it is transparent, but then if I try to insert it into Word or place it in Quark it has white space around it.

The image I attached was probably for the web.

I do have it in a .tif format at 300 dpi. I probably attached the other so it wouldn't take so long to open.

Any ideas??

Well the gif is fine, Word doesn't do transparencies, so I suggest just putting wutever color bg you want in the document behind the actual logo in photoshop and then just saving that off as a jpg. :)

Well thank you for clarifying that about WORD, I would be banging my head against the wall for the next 10 days trying to get it to work and thanks to you I know I won't be going crazy! THANKS!!

You've been a great help, glad I discovered this forum!

Always a pleasure

Word doesn't do transparencies

I beg to differ - the attached screenshot is from word 2002 using the original real estate systems logo.

I just tried it in word with the file I attached and it does work. WORD is a pain to manipulate but it works fine. I wonder if my client even tried to do that or she just saw the white space when she opened up the actual file (of course it's white unless you have Photoshop you can make it that checked bkgd when using a transparent bkgd). UGH, thanks!!!

when u open a new file the dimensions page shows size and background color. I do believe so. :)

Hi all,

I tried to use 'Save for Web dialog box' to make the background transparent. However it has a black background now. Please help!

You need to map the transparent color(s).
In the "Save for web dialog", select the "Eyedropper tool" (I), click the color(s) you want to disapear, (notice the selection in the color table) and then click "Maps selected colors to transparent" (bottom of the color table buttons).

In my line of work, I never do this that way.
I have the background in a diferent layer, and to save transparent gif or png, just hide that bg layer, before saving for web.

Good luck
