You can take a look at Apache James Mail Server, it's free, only you need installed Java Runtime Environment 1.4 or higer which is free.
You can get James at following link: http://www.apache.org/
and JRE at http://java.sun.com/

you could also try www.xmailserver.org which doesn't need any extra packages like JRE
or even Mercury Mail Transport System (http://www.pmail.com/overviews/ovw_mercury.htm)

For home use, one of the best free mail servers I've experimented is Axigen Mail Server. It's only for 5 users, but it's full featured (supports antivirus & antispam filtering and includes calendar, tasks etc.) and easy to install & use for both Linux & Windows.

It depends on how many accounts you will host?
if <5, there are many free mail servers for your selection.
Search "free mail server windows" on Google....
mailenable is the baby i use on windows boxes ;)

The free version only does SMTP and POP. No webmail / IMAP extensions or anything.
But it's unlimited, and easy as pie to use / setup :)

Appachi's Mail server works fine, i like functionality of the software, i am using mdaemon mail server in my environment but looking to move towards kerio mail server, which has more functionality and options then mdaemon. (both are available for trial use).
